Why unilateral tradewars in a global market are dumb, episode 47

Subaru Canada to source more vehicles from Japan, not U.S.

Vehicles made in Canada and sold here obviously aren’t subject to tariffs, but unlike rival Japanese brands Toyota and Honda, Subaru doesn’t have any Canadian manufacturing facilities.

There will be shifts in vehicle production between Subaru’s plants in Japan and the United States for the 2026 model year; and because of this, Kubota expects that Canada’s imports from the U.S. may be reduced from 26% to just 10%. The difference will come from Subaru’s plants in Japan; those cars won’t face tariffs due to Canada’s free-trade agreement with that country.

Temu customers in the U.S. hit with steep import charges due to tariffs

A three-pack of men's athletic shorts advertised as on sale for $23.61 with free shipping came out to $56.36 after a $32.75 import charge, according to an NBC News review of product listings.

Both Shein and Temu had issued notices to customers on their websites saying price adjustments would start April 25 “due to recent changes in global trade rules and tariffs” that have raised operating expenses.

Another X user joked: "Temu needs to put a 'Trump did This' sticker next to the new import charges line at checkout."

Unlike earlier uses of such stickers to claim the price of gas or eggs or other things went up or down, this time there is only one person responsible and it is the one looking directly at the Sun.

Sensitive topic apparently! How dare Amazon provide price (tariff) transparency to its customers! (Bezo's reportedly killed the idea after a Trump conversation).

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, on Tuesday accused the online retail giant of being “hostile and political,” citing a report — disputed by Amazon — from Punchbowl News saying that the company would start displaying the exact cost of tariff-related price increases alongside its products.

Ms. Leavitt said it was “not a surprise” coming from Amazon, as she held up a copy of a 2021 article from Reuters with the headline, “Amazon partnered with China propaganda arm.”

Hey now, is that any way to treat a major contributor to your bosses inaugaration party?

Tariffs-related stockpiling boosts US goods trade deficit to record high

No need to panic. This is clearly temporary. US businesses bought a little extra so that they will have enough product until all the new US factories sprout up next month.

The report from the Commerce Department's Census Bureau prompted economists to sharply downgrade their GDP estimates for last quarter to show a steeper decline rather than growth just stalling. Goldman Sachs now sees GDP contracting at a 0.8% annualized rate while JPMorgan forecasts output declining at a 1.75% pace.

A glorious (but temporary) decline of US growth!

The economy grew at a 2.4% rate in the fourth quarter.

Booo! Joe Biden did that!

I remember some businesses putting surcharges on bills during Biden's presidency to protest inflation and minimum wage increases. I guess Republicans don't like the shoe on the other foot.

Schumer says Democrats will force Senate floor vote on Trump tariffs

The harder fight — and one in which Schumer has no control — is in the U.S. House, where a majority of lawmakers would have to approve the resolution for it to become binding.

A similar resolution sponsored this month by U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a Democrat from Virginia, wound up passing the Senate after four Republicans crossed party lines to support it. Schumer is trying to repeat that result.

White House threatens to veto Senate measure nixing Trump’s global tariffs

The Senate is expected to force a vote this week on the resolution.
