There's already a thread on Canada going back and forth with the US. This thread is for any tariffs involving the US: Canada, Mexico, EU, Japan, wherever.

Europe has responded to Trump's steel tariffs with a 50% tariff tariff on American whiskey.

And now Trump is considering a tariff tariff tariff due to the tariff tariff.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump slammed the E.U. as “one of the most hostile and abusive taxing and tariffing authorities in the World, which was formed for the sole purpose of taking advantage of the United States.” He called the proposed tariff on American whiskey, an industry that is already facing a slowdown in the U.S. market, “nasty.”

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump wrote.

Maybe he can rename the Champagne region of France to be Swillsville.

We will know a lot more in a couple of months. By then,

1) the government will have a CR through September (the end of this fiscal year)
2) the Trump reconciliation bill will have passed, extending the huge tax breaks for the rich, and including huge spending cuts
3) what tariffs are likely to continue into the future
4) have an idea regarding just how bad the inflation will be
=============
WHAT WILL HAPPEN ALMOST FOR SURE (as promised)
1) non-defense federal government spending will be greatly reduced
2) the vast majority of regulators will be gone, increasing IRS non-payments and other fraud by large amounts
3) the rich will get their promised many trillions dollar tax break, including a large reduction in the corporate tax rate
4) the working classes and the poor will have greatly reduced services in the transition from federal to state responsibilities
5) corporate criminals (especially environmental) will have their lawsuits and regulations erased

DID WE VOTE FOR THIS?
Of course we did. We knew what Trump intended with regard to the federal government and regulation. The big difference is just how clumsy and stupid the implementation has been. All of the above COULD have been done with a DOGE similar to that of 1994, one that resulted in the cutting of 377,000 federal jobs, welfare reform and ZERO lawsuits. And just BTW, the result was a surplus and a 10-year plan to retire the debt.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT
If there were a DOGE that operated more sanely and legally to virtually destroy the federal infrastructure, the majority would end up cheering, as long as there were no cuts to Medicare, Social Security and Medicaid. In addition, any monies that government wanted to transfer from rich states to poor states would be moved to block grants to the states (revenue sharing).

Today I saw that the gold (5 million dollar) visa proposed by Trump is going to let those foreigners that buy this visa to never pay tax on foreign income to the USA. This is a privilege that even USA citizens do not get. I assume that a rich USA citizen that makes a lot overseas could renounce their citizenship and just buy the gold visa.

Trump owns a vineyard, Trump Winery which means any tariff on wine and champagne will benefit his own business. Since he neither divested nor put anything into a blind trust, he is fully aware of this conflict of interest.

Sure, it's minor compared to his meme coin and forcing the government to pay a premium into his venues during his very frequent visists, but still, it is one more thing....

I love how trump thinks it's a tax cut for the americans and a tax on other countries, the most hilarious moment was watching his press secretary other day get owned by the AP over her lies/stupidity.
Trump has believed in high tariffs since the 80's. He is simply being consistent.

And he doesn't care how many people think that he or Press Secretary get taught about economic policy from the AP.
========
However, he SHOULD listen to the Wall Street and other billionaires.

IMO, much of this is a diversion while he gets his reconciliation law passed, including the huge tax break for his friends.

He has exactly ZERO interest in reducing the debt or balancing the budget. He has other priorities.

wich I think makes him pure evil.

If he has no interest in balancing the budget, then whats the purpose of cutting stuff to the poor, obviously not to pay for tax cuts as those are more then he removes. It comes off as just being evil and cruel for the sake of it. it's like robbing a guy so you have enough money to have money you then use to rob a bank.

and not listening to the Ap wich is right here, but like you said, if he isn't paying attention tot he AP why not his bosses that are opposed t this stupidity.

Trump says no exemptions on steel, aluminum tariffs; more are coming: Live updates

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One late Sunday, Trump said the 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imported into the U.S. that went into effect last week are here to stay. He added that reciprocal and sectorial tariffs will kick in on April 2, which he called a "liberating day."

National Economic Council director Kevin Hassett said stock market volatility will persist until at least April 2, when Trump is expected to unveil plans for reciprocal and additional sectorial tariffs. [And then what? From 'volatility' to nosedive?]

I would almost feel bad about what Canada's doing to US in this trade war, if we were not having almost daily threats of invasion, ad this is almost all self inflicted by trump.

I suppose one silver lining of Brexit is that my scotch will dodge any tariffs on the EU.

He doesn't really think that. What he thinks (i.e., KNOWS) is that if he tells his base that often enough (24/7), they will buy into it..... at least until his tarriffs bite THEM in the butt. After all, they bought into him reducing inflation and driving down high prices on DAY 1. Now the song is "pain in the short term and riches, riches, riches in the long term." Let's see how long a short term lasts. When that short term goes on for months and months and evaporates people's 401-K's and eggs, meat and liquor increase by 25-30%, I think we will see a revolt like never before.

Don't be silly. There is a reason behind it. He is doing it because a lot of his followers want to hurt the people they disagree with. The cruelty is part of the point.

The gullibility of the Trump supporters is a huge problem. We have Caroline Leavitt lying to the American people (and, shockingly, with a cross hanging around her neck) telling them that a tariff is a tax cut. No economist believes this. We have people on this very forum who have expressed the incorrect view the tariffs are paid by the exporting country.

As long as they can get away with it, Trump and his flunkies will continue to lie to the American people.

yeah, we can disagree with wether tariffs are good or not, but they are not tax cuts and such, it's hilarious watching the double speak and lies spread.

Agree. And by the way, I would never deny that tariffs have their place. But what Trump is doing appears to be a recipe for self-immolation for the USA. And taking some of the rest of us (I am Canadian) along for the ride.

exactly, I grew up during the softwood lumber tarriffs and while they annoyed/angered Canadians, we didn't turn on the states like this.

And the losers are the consumers, while the governments and corporations rake it in laughing all the way to the bank.
to be fair they are just as much losers this time, there is a reason they keep saying, "DON"T DO THIS." to trump.
