In conclusion, this is the difference between a “Heresy Hunter” and a “Pharisee Hunter”; “Heresy hunters” actively seek to find things that are wrong with others according to their own ideas, opinions and traditions. “Pharisee hunters” don’t have to hunt a thing. But they should respond when the Heresy hunter comes along and puts them in their sights.

So based on your theory, Jesus was being a 'Heresy Hunter' when he entered the temple overturned the tables, and lectured them!

15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves,
16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.
17 And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written: "'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'? But you have made it 'a den of robbers.'"
Mark 11:15-17 NIV

In Luke 18:10-14, Jesus says, "Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I possess. And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other."

Pharisees are to be found in the circles of the most orthodox, and they pretend to have a fervent love for God and others, yet they fatally many concerning the way of salvation. Pharisees likes to come to the Master's table because of what's on it, not because they love the Master. Pharisees claims to be God's spokes people give evidence that their deepest motives and life patterns are to honor, glory, and magnify God, and to grow in humility, holiness, and obedience, we can be sure that God has not called or sent them. If they are orientated to money, prestige, recognition, popularity, power, sexual looseness, and selfishness, they do not belong to Jesus Christ. If they are proud arrogant, resentful, egotistical, and self-indulgent, they clearly are Pharisees who are hypocrites and heretics. The mark of the pharisees who are heretics are self-serving unfaithfulness to God and His truth.

"A pharisee is hard on others and easy on himself, but a spiritual man is easy on others and hard on himself." Tozer, A.W.

There was a book called King of the Jews by D. Thomas Lancaster, has a chapter devoted to the idea that, theologically speaking, Jesus was most likely a Pharisee. In general, being associated with the Pharisees is not a good thing. Jesus was not "officially" called a Pharisee however He was, for all practical purposes, a Pharisee in His theology, His hermeneutic, His parables, His argumentation, His conclusions and even His dinner invitations were Pharisaic in origin.

To me, Jesus was not a Pharisee. He was God-man, our Messiah.

Hmm. Not sure where you came up with that off-the-wall notion.

Jesus was not actively seeking to find something wrong with the people in the temple, nor was he trying to impose His own ideas, opinions and traditions on people when He turned over the tables in the temple. In fact, that would be an absolute impossibility according to scripture, which says this;
John 5:19 (NIV)
Jesus gave them this answer: "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

Therefore, Jesus was clearly not imposing His own ideas, opinions and traditions on people. He did ONLY that which He saw the Father do. Indeed, He said that the Son can do NOTHING by himself. So I fail to see your point.

These people in the temple thought they could buy off a sacrifice from some dude selling doves instead of giving God their best.

However, this caused EVEN MORE people to hunt Jesus, literally;
Mark 11:18 (NIV)
The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.

I actually think that I would agree that in this situation Jesus was being a heresy hunter. Zeal for his father's house.

Joh 2:17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

Psa 69:9 For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Psa 119:139 My zeal hath consumed me, because mine enemies have forgotten thy words

Remember Jesus is perfect and he is setting an example here for us to follow. This is an example of being heresy hunter in a good way.....Righteous anger because of zeal for God's house.

Thanks for the work you put into this PR.
One of the dangers I see cropping up in the HH crowd is that they very often lack the logical skills to see the obvious things you have pointed out here. Also, they very often lack the basic knowledge of scriptures that would be essential if one were to set themselves up as a doctrinal policeman.
I often find myself reading one of their harangues wondering where this person got the idea they were qualified to do what they were attempting to do? Anyone can copy and paste from HH websites.. but that is a poor substitute for actually reading and having understanding of the scriptures. I try not to be rude to them... but seriuosly... Spend a few years in the Book before you set up shop as a "watchman."

This is actually one of my biggest personal gripes with the modern-day Pharisee. Many of them are very big on copying and pasting what someone else thinks.

I am no Bible scholar, but what you get from me is my beliefs in my words, not something parroted from someone else's website.

Jesus was jewish. He also was a rabbi. There is some debate as to which sect he belonged to. But he was likely very close to being a Pharisee if he wasn't literally one. Remember that he kept the jewish law and not half heartedly.

In first century Judea there were two main sects of Judaism. There were the Sadducees, who did not believe in an afterlife, and there were the Pharisees, who did.

Christ's theology in relation to the afterlife, inter alia, is identical to that of the Pharisee sect. He had Pharisee friends, and spent a lot of his time in discussion with other Pharisees, such as Nicodemus, and was even buried in Nicodemus' tomb. Therefore it is clear that he was himself a Pharisee. Remember that this was not a term of abuse in his day; we have created it as such, but to Christ it was a descriptor only.

The reason Christ was so tough on the Pharisees is the same reason as any one of us might have a lot to say about our own denomination; it is the one closest to our own hearts. But to use 'Pharisee' as equivalent to 'hypocrite', and put that construction on every occurence in the gospels is a mistake.

After Christ died the followers of the Way diverged from Pharisee belief, and it is this divergence which is reflected in the gospels when they speak disparagingly of Pharisees. It is unlikely that Christ would himself have been hostile to the whole group, however cross he might be with individual expressions of hypocrisy, etc.

If Jesus was a pharisee, He was the most lousy one who ever lived. He never once, not ever took a sin offering up to the temple to cover His sins. No wonder the Pharisees hated Him so. They must have thought, "who does he think he is?"

Which is pretty much what they were after Jesus about all the time.

I think you will find that the evidence is that Christ's parents were good Pharisees, and so was he.

When Jesus was born his parents took him to the Temple and offered a sacrifice on his behalf. Luke 2:22

Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of Passover, and when he was 12 he went with them. Luke 2:41

When he knew his death was near, Christ went to Jerusalem for Passover. He says himself that he 'sat in the Temple courts teaching every day'. Matthew 26:55

None of this was for sightseeing.

As for your comment about sin offerings; clearly the Lord did not sin, so did not need sin offerings to be made. However, he also did not need to be baptised, but did so, he said; 'in order to fulfill all righteousness'. Therefore, although the Bible does not state that he himself made offerings, it is highly probable that he did, because the norm was for Jews to do so.

If he had not, this would have caused comment and complaint from those who wanted to find fault with him and his ministry, in the same way as they found fault with him eating and drinking with sinners. It is not raised as a charge by anyone at any time, and we are, therefore, safe to assume that he complied with normal practice. Not because he needed to, but because it was the right thing to do.

Now this is quite a list. I ran across this list on a "discernment" website. Supposedly, there is something wrong with each item on this list. It makes you wonder if anyone (besides said "discernment" website) is right about anything;

Perhaps that "discernment" website would be better served sharing a list of people/ministries they agree with. I'm guessing one hand's worth of fingers would be sufficent to calculate them all (with a few left over, I'm sure).

On a different note, I noticed the word "fun" was on their list. Never heard of "Fun" ministries so I guess they're against fun. I'll bet they're a big hit at parties.
