I took an interest in the Examen after Davidnic mentioned it in a post a good while ago .

I did some research and , since I began to put it into practice , I have found it a very fruitful prayer .

It's worth looking into . Some info below may help anyone interested......

A great way to pray is to look for God’s presence in your life. More than 400 years ago St. Ignatius Loyola encouraged prayer-filled mindfulness by proposing what has been called the Daily Examen. The Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and to discern his direction for us.

Thanks! Although I count myself as a Methodist, the prayer traditions of the Catholic Church are so deeply rich that they have influenced me greatly.

Thank you .

And in Methodism you have the richness of of the Wesley brothers' hymns .

What a gem is "Love Divine" by Charles Wesley .

That's one I need to look at too. Thanks Colin. Yet another valuable contribution from a Saint.
And like the other saints , Paul , St Ignatius had periods of consolation and of desolation . It was those experiences which he used to write his Spiritual Exercises .

Plus in his early years he got into trouble with the authorities . More than once he was imprisoned by the Inquisition on suspicion of heresy , but always remaining faithful to the Magisterium .

I have read a fascinating book by former Jesuit Louis Savary that updates the spiritual exercises by imbuing them with the spirit of mystic and scientist (also a Jesuit) Pierre Teilhard de Chardin.

It was so mesmerizing I am going to take a spiritual exercises retreat based on this book. The retreat is called "Ignatius Transposed."

I've taken mini-retreats on the spiritual exercises, but never done them in the traditional form, but since I'm pretty non-traditional I think I will gain more from the transposed version. It follows the format of the regular spiritual exercises, employing the examen, lectio, etc.
