Tears during prayer?

I would like to ask everyone if having tears (crying) during prayer is normal? Is it a sign of anything?

I am an intercessor on Sunday mornings for my church, but I have not had any training. At my old church, one man whom I respected said he often got tears when he prayed, and he said it was a sign of the Holy Spirit being present.

Sometimes when I pray with others, I get tears rolling down my cheeks. I worry a *little* that people I'm praying for may be scared or uncomfortable to see me with tears. I am not embarrassed, but I wonder if I should try to refrain? Or would that be holding back the Holy Spirit?

Does anyone have some thoughts or advice? Thank you.

Prayer is a heart to heart conversation between a believer and his Lord. Certainly, emotion is manifested.

I say this assuming you are a new believer: to say tears is a sign of the Holy Spirit being present is an overstatement. I say it because there are better signs such as desire to praise, desire to obey, understanding, etc.

It is not wise to list the signs of the Holy Spirit's presence because the Bible does not record it. (Both your mentor's statemement and my above statement are unwise.:( ) As you get experienced in praying to the Lord, you will know better when you come to the Lord's court.

Just remember that the bible records Jesus prayed with loud cries. And also remember that Jesus prayed often. :) Anyone else would like to add?

I cry when I pray for others...I cry when I pray to God. I cry when the Lord speaks to me...but I also have extremely joyous moments as well, and many times, these tears are tears of joy...but sometimes they are tears over others sin, tears over situations...I am really bothered sometimes about the sin that has entered the world...but I get to a point sometimes to where I just absolutely HATE sin, and I get very angry about it because I see what it does to people's live and to their relationship with the Lord.... and I know it hurts God.

I don't think you should refrain. It seems like they are coming from a genuine place. As IK said, prayer is a heart to heart conversation with God and sometimes I definitely tear up when I think about certain aspects of our relationship. It's not necessarily just during sad times, but also during times when it hits me just how awesome HE is. And that is quite overwhelming. :).

When I pray and tears are present its a cleansing experience for me. I definitly believe there is a time for tears; Jesus wept. Prayer is also a time to rejoice and many times that is in tears as well. Tears are apart of our release. Its intimate.

When you're praying, try not to focus on what others are thinking of you, but instead, on what you are praying for, and on the Father and the Son. All things will fall into place when those are your focus. Tears... smiles.... quivering... soft voice... louder voice....etc., if it's happening when your focus is on God, then you needn't worry about anything else. God bless you for your prayers. They are a wonderful testament of your faith, and you are wonderful for lifting others up in prayer. It means so much when somebody prays for you. It does to me.
