Did you go in Alabama? At least we learned how to read and write. The state of public schools today is sad.
I was in Texas until the 5th grade and then in Alabama for the rest

That was rough, moving, having to make new friends.
Things did get better for me when I went to High School 10th through 12th grade. I guess I had proven myself

Teacher, Jimmy says he has two dads (and no mommy)!
[Maybe we’ll have special schools for the children of them?]
Some have two dads or two moms.

Like I said, only stick to the facts.

The move back to Alabama was ok. It was the same school.

They didn't want to mess with your fists.

Teacher responds. Oh, well some kids have two dad's. It's not polite to talk about other children's families.

The state of public schools today is sad.
As a teacher in a public school (albeit in a different country), public schools are the symptom of a far bigger problem and that is, at least in part, because they are dealing with things that public schools have never dealt with in their entire history (nor has our society).

The public schools were horrible to me. I was a straight A student until the 7th grade. I went to middle school and I was bullied, assaulted and given a concussion.
I started lifting weights and learning how to fight.
In the 9th grade I was beating the bullies up.
So basically what I learned in school was how to fight
I sent my son to private school and served on the board
If you don't mind....if you're a straight A student until 7th grade, I'm not sure how public schools were "horrible" for you. If you're straight A, schools (and you) are both doing VERY well for you!

What it sounds like is that your peer group was pretty awful.

I am lucky I'm in a special program that limits my class size (since it's a significant safety risk in my behaviours class), but yeah....all my jr high teachers have OVER 28 kids with....
(on average....)
50-60% ESL speakers
1-3 refugees who have LITERALLY never been in a classroom (some of them don't even know how to read or write in their NATIVE LANGUAGE! it's crazy)
40% have a behavioural code (mild to severe)

Teacher responds. Oh, well some kids have two dad's. It's not polite to talk about other children's families.
Is it problematic for a teacher to say that?

I'd argue it's impolite to speak DISPARANGINGLY about another child's family but simply SAYING they have two dads should be just fine (also, so long as it's not a "gossipy" situation).

I hear many teachers quit after first year because it's too stressful. We had a Spanish teacher who quit after a year and a half because the students kept bullying her. To be fair, my hometown isn't known to be friendly.

Sadly Riley, it's not just a your hometown issue.

In the last 5years, there has been a NOTICEABLE creep of awful behaviour (disrespectful, violent) coming into schools. And that happenned because of some kinda shifts in culture.

Theere is likely an exaustive list of all the cultural changes that contribute to that....

I was going to get out of the Navy in 1993 and become a teacher. Things changed a lot four years after I graduated. I chose to stay in and ended up in Somalia. It was safer I am told.

Well??!! I'm 53, just had to get two new eyes, can't see my toes, can feel every bone in my body, nothing tastes like it used to, and I'm loosing my hair!

Just kidding, I'm doing ok. But all that stuff is true.

My wife has a teaching degree. She left teaching because it became too difficult to do with all the misbehavior in the classroom and the schools allowing the nonsense. And that was before all the wokeness that has been happening. She got out just in time.

I don't think so. But the teacher shouldn't be extrapolating beyond that. You might have a kid who says, "Billy only has a mom and no dad." It's not the teachers job to extrapolate why or what that means. A simple, sometimes kids don't have a dad at home. It's not polite to talk about other people's families.
