Suicide pods and the trivialization of death

UnHerd reported this week on a voluntary suicide using a Sarco pod, a 3D-printed personal gas chamber designed to take the life of its owner via nitrogen. The arrival of such a thing, both in terms of its purpose and its design aesthetics, suggests that therapeutic suicide is set to become a routine part of our culture, or at least that it aspires to do so.

This is not a trivial development, for it goes to the heart of the deepest questions of existence. Our modern Promethean aspirations are not merely marked by Frankenstein’s desire to play God in the creation of life. We have taken on the role of God in the bringing of death as well.

Death has been turned into a routine thing just as life (of which it is a privation) has been turned into something of no intrinsic value.

Yes I am noticing this devaluation of life in other areas like abortion which ends life and is full of misery. Where ungodly marriage devalues marriage perse in society and where cutting up body parts is devaluing its unique creation.

I guess this is inevitable if there is no God and humans are just a cog in a big machine that has no meaning or reason to exist and there is nothing beyond death.

I use to work in an old persons residential care. I use to see them struggling. I thought some were mean old people until I realised it was their pain that put the frown on their face and not their disposition.

I would talk with them and they lite up and told many stories of their life. Some amazing through the war time and what it was like. How their children had grown up and became doctors and diplomats. Or had lived locally and were pioneers.

This was a ward of death. Often I would go back to the wing to find another resident had passed. But they still had light in them even through the pain and sickness and then one day were no more. Like a candle went out with the gentle wind.

My mum who is 84 tells me that she still feels like the 20 year old or 30 year old or 60 year old in her mind. Even though her body is falling apart. I think unless you are mentally gone and vene then there is no need to end someones life as they don't know otherwise. But if a person is still mentally aware they are stll the same person and soul in the old bag of bones. Just as strong as ever.

Suicide ideation comes from a cognitive distortion which can happen when young or old. Theres just more to be worried about when older. But the mindset is the same. Humans need meaning, meaning beyond the world. Thats true in old age as it is young.

Whens theres a greater meaning than this world has to offer which is nothing, then the old body and worries of this world are not so important. Theres a deeper sense of peace and meaning carrying you along that makes this life a fleeting moment to endure.

But if you think that this life is all there is and we are just lumps of cells that go to nothing then of course people will want to end it. Its a matter of worldview.

Studies have shown that older people who have faith have more positive outcomes in physical and mental health and living longer. There is some truth I think to spiritual healing as far as mental health is concerned. Maybe they should be more concerned about addressing mental illness rather than taking the easy options all the time.
