my pastor found slipknot in his sons cd player(the kid is like 16).... he grounded him for a month and is making him write an essay on why music like that is evil. but not only that he spoke out against the band on sunday...(of course after he did his research). i think satan-spawned devils were the words he used....hahahaha.... what do you guys think? do you think the pastors punishment was too harsh? or what are your thoughts on the band in general?

That sounds something like my parents would do. I do however do not see this too be harsh. As a parent you are to direct your children in the right path. The child may see it as being wrong, but from a parents point of view it's different. The kids father is just trying to make sure his child isn
t subjected to that kind of satanism. (And yes, I do call it that, for what they represent.)

personally i like slipknot but i can see why the pastor might ground his son for having it in his cd player, its not exactly the most christian music out there. I believe the punishment was way too harsh though. Like i said before, i really wish there was a christian band that can pull off what slipknot does. People have tried at christian death metal and hard rock....but its just not the same. Oh well

the band isnt evil, it just uses agressive lyrics and unchristian symbols to get more fans. More of a money making scheme i suppose. Im not defending their actions or anything, just go look into something before you **** it

I would seriously doubt your friend's truthfulness with that story. Are you sure that it happened? Because I doubt it highly. And if that really happened, then those people simply aren't christian.

You have nothing against christians? I should hope not since you claim to be one.

My personal belief is that he should not have grounded his son, but the essay I think was a good idea, I wouldn't have told him to write an essay tho, I would have asked him to research the bands belief, the lyrics of the songs, and their conduct, and ask him to match it to what the word of God says. And I would have helped in the process.

<rant> Ive looked up most of their lyrics, and most dont coincide with God's Word. But then again, they ARE a secular band and thats not exactly their greatest concern. Like ive said, they are not satanic. They only use the extreme lyrics, aggressive singing, and unchristian symbols to get more fans. No, its not a great christian idea....but a brilliant marketing ploy. Face it, alot of people in the US--and the world for that matter-- are not christian and find the music perfectly fine. They buy the cds, the band makes money, the cycle goes on and on. Its called economy. Do stuff to make money. I may defend their music, but i dont defend their religious beliefs. I do not know, or care, if any of the band members or christian or not. As long as their music isn't openly satanic or unchristian im fine with it. I believe the father acted out of ignorance to what the band really is. Punishing the boy for listening to music he has probably never even heard in his life is just not right. Yes, he should teach the boy christian ideals but he should also teach the boy to make decisions out of his own free will...that IS why God gave it to us. </rant>

lol, ranting
First of all, take time to read a post, and not imply your own anger towards it. You are projecting what others have said about the band etc. on to my post. READ IT AGAIN!
I did not say that I was against the music of Slipknot. I also did not say that the father should have made the decision as to whether or not the kid should listen to that music even though it IS his right.

And freewill... well that's a WHOLE other thread

My initial reaction is to say that it was unfair. I definitely would have handled it much different. As long as any kid of mine is living in my house, they will not own that kind of garbage. First of all, there are too many great Christian bands out there (especially in the metal genre) to have to listen to that inferior gimmick band. Secondly, as punishment I would have thrown it away in tiny pieces, then after catching up on the band in question (reading the lyrics, what they are all about) I would have showed point by point, why a band like that is not a good thing for a developing adult to listen to. Kids are very impressionable with music, that is a fact. Garbage in garbage out, it still rings true today. Then when the child is responsible enough to move out on their own, they can listen to whatever they want, and hopefully they will have the sense to be ashamed of listening to something that goes against everything they believe in.
The only audience I would humiliate my child in front of would be me and the mother. Maybe the siblings too. To do it in front of a whole congregation is irresponsible and wreckless in my opinion.
