Significance of Mark 14:51-52

These verses are just after Jesus was betrayed by Judas to the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.

It reads:

And there followed him a certain young man, having a linen cloth cast about his naked body, and the young men laid hold on him: And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.

I've always wanted to know if there is any significance to this certain young man, and what it means for believers today.

The note in the Orthodox Study Bible reads:
14:51, 52 To flee naked is a great shame and humiliation (Ezk 16:39; Am 2:16). Some teach this young man was James, the brother of the Lord (Gal 1:19), while others say that it was the apostle John, the youngest of the twelve. Most others believe this was Mark, the author of this Gospel, as it was a common literary device for a writer not to give his own name (see Lk 24:13; Jn 21:24). The other evangelists do not report this incident. They would not have been inclined to humiliate Mark, whereas Mark would have been more likely to relate such an event concerning himself.

The Lutheran Study Bible has:
14:51 young man. Detail unique to Mk; it is thought to be Mark himself.

This is plausible and if accurate is a testament to Mark's evangelistic office and the credibility of his Gospel. This short reading would thus serve as an apology for the authorship much as when Paul defended his apostleship to the Corinthians.

"What I find most interesting about these two verses (Mark 15:51-52) is that it seems almost unbelievable. Remember this happened on a chilly night.

And this guy only had on a thin linen cloth? In Mark 15:54 - two verses later (and an hour or so later) - Peter fully dressed including a cloak is huddling close to an open fire to keep warm.

Whoever this naked guy was - he must have been very COLD.

Who would take a hike to Gethsemane in inadequate clothing? The only plausible answer is: he was in a hurry to get there and didn't have time to put on warmer clothing."

I personally do not think there is any theological significance or symbolism here. Just an interesting historical tidbit.

Those two verses are probably the only two verses that made me do a double take. I read them and went, "Now Jesus is arre-wait.. what? What did I just read?"
