The fact is that we're dealing pretty well with our poor. People would rather be poor in America than anywhere else in the world. Just look at the caravans coming from Central America, hoping to become poor here rather than in their own country.

I am not certain what you are saying no to.
Should we not give them Jesus Christ?
Are we supposed to just give them money instead of food and clothing?

All three. Best of all, the dignity that would ensured by the means to obtain all three via a job with a living wage, or if they are too unworldy or too damaged to survive in a work situation, appropriate accommodation and ample WELFARE* payments.

So much damage has been done to the cirumstances of the poor by the rich, via the ongong and worsening economic crash caused by Friedman's neoliberal economics ; feeding the greed of the rich at the expense of the country's material as well as social infrastructure.

What the Haves who hope to be welcomed by God as genuine Christians, at the end of their days, is that the measure we give, is the measure we shall receive, as Jesus, himself, stated. Nevertheless, judging from Jesus' story of Lazarus and the rich man, we can be sure it will largely fall on deaf ears.
