Recommend a German Bible for my friend!

I hope some of the Germans here can suggest a good all-round protestant German bible, intended for someone I know whose mother tongue is German. I'm looking for a bible similar to the English NRSV or NIV bibles, in other words; modern translations that strives to achieve a balance between the idiomatic and concordant translation principles.

Hallo miteinander. Ich schreib Englisch, um es ubuntu zu erleichtern, die Antwort zu verstehen. Google translate bietet ja nicht immer die verständlichsten Texte. Ich wollte per PM antworten, um Euch hier nciht mit Englisch zu belästigen, aber für PMs hab ich zu wenige Forennachrichten geschrieben...

The most wide used bible in Germany (at least among Protestants) is most likely the actual revision of the Luther bible: Luther1984 (there is also a revision called Luther 1997 or something, but this is based on the textus receptus and does not regard findings of modern textual criticism).

In Switzerland, the most popular bible is the Zürich bible (which goes back to Huldrych Zwingli). The most recent revision is from 2007.

I have both bibles myself, and those are the ones I read most often. Luther is very poetic in a way, the bible stays true to his style back then in same places, which makes the language a bit harder to understand (think KJV), but the recent revision is not too hard. It has a powerful language though, so there is a good point why some say Luther was a prophet. This bible is not too accurate in some places where Luther did not agree with the bible text. He felt free to change it slightly.

The Zürich bible is closer to the original text, but also aims to be understandable. It is very good in some passages, where you wouldn't understand Luthers text properly. It also has inclusive language, so it treis to be modern and unserstandable on the one hand and tre to the original text on the other hand, while Luther treis to stay true to the original Luther bible from 1545 on the one hand (very poetic) and true to the original texts on the other hand (as a matter of fact, Luther's language skills were not the best regarding Hebrew...)

Hope that helps. I have no experience with the Schlachter2000 which was also recommended. I have the impression it is more popular in rather conservative denominations (here the situation in Germany is way different than in the US).

I'm definitively looking for something that isn't based on the Textus Receptus... It was just the Luther1997 that was based on the t. receptus, not Luther1984, right?

The Zürich Biblesounds very interesting, though... But would Germans have problems with the language of the Zürich Bible? How much of a difference is there between the German you speak in Switzerland compared to the German they speak in Germany?

Do you know how the Elberfelder Bibel compares to the Zürich Bible and the Luther Bible?

the German Equivalent to the NRSV is either the Gute Nachricht Bibel or the Neues Leben Bibel.
The Equivalent to the NIV is the Hoffnung für alle Bibel. I'd recommend you to buy the Neues Leben Bibel for your friend, as I think that the Hoffnung für Alle (although it's widely used in many Baptist or Pentecostal Churches here in Germany or Austria) is partly too freely translated.

das deutsche Äquivalent zur NRSV is die Gute Nachricht Bibel (herausgegeben von der Deutschen Bibelgesellschaft) oder die Neues Leben Bibel.
Das Äquivalent zur NIV ist die Hoffnung für alle.
Ich würde Ihnen empfehlen die Neues Leben Bibel für Ihren Freund zu kaufen, da ich denke, dass die Hoffnung für alle oft zu frei übersetzt ist. (Obwohl sie in vielen Evangelischen Freikirchen, bei den Baptisten und in der Freien Christengemeinde-Pfingstgemeinde häufig verwendet wird.)

The Zurich Bible isn't written in Swiss German Dialect but in Standard German! (But check yourself, just click on the link above! ) Any Germanspeaking person will understand it.
The only difference is that instead of ß ss is used.

However, unless someone isn't from Switzerland (or the very west of Autria), it's impossible for him/her to understand Swiss German Dialect (Schwitzerdüütsch).

du hast wahrscheinlich schon längst die Bibel gekauft, aber damit andere Leute die über diesen Thread stolpern nicht falsche Infos bekommen:

Die Hoffnung für alle ist ganz bestimmt keine Übersetzung (eher eine Übertragung) und definitiv NICHT mit der NIV zu vergleichen!

Die Revidierte Elberfelder wäre da eine gute Wahl (sehr Wortgetreu, auch wenn manchem die Grammatik nicht passt ) oder eben die schon erwähnte Schlachter 2000. Manche meinen die Schlachter lässt sich besser lesen...

you most likely have already bought the bible. I just wanted to set something straight for other who discover this thead:

The above mentioned "Hoffnung für Alle" is by no means comparable to the NIV! I wouldn't even see it an actual translation either.

The "Revidierte Elberfelder" would be a good choice. It is a very literal translation, even if some wouldn't agree with the grammar . The above mentioned "Schlachter 2000" would also be a good choice. Some find it easier to read.
