Researchers have discovered an ancient military base that may corroborate a Bible story about God's angels fending off an attack on Jerusalem. The Angel of the Lord is then said to have descended on the invading military and killed 185,000 soldiers in a single night. There has not been any archaeological evidence that the supernatural event - or even the battle - actually happened. Now, using modern mapping techniques, archaeologist Stephen Compton claims he has found more evidence the epic battle took place.

This reminds me of a verse in Daniel 12:4 and also Psalm 111:2, as Christianity is getting proven by modern science and knowledge. :) It seems that scientific discovery is increasing, and we can use science to prove Biblical events. God bless these archeologists.

Psalm 111:2 (NKJV): The works of the Lord are great, Studied by all who have pleasure in them.

Psalm 111:2 expresses wonder at God's great works or deeds, which are studied by all who delight in them. Scientists engage with these works through their research and discovery. Faith and science complement each other, as both acknowledge God's presence and power in the natural world. Scientific inquiry is driven by a belief in a deeper meaning to the universe and a recognition of God's involvement. The verse affirms that studying God's works deepens our appreciation for and connection to the LORD.

Daniel 12:4 (NKJV): "But you, Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book until the time of the end; many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase."

Is that the siege of Jerusalem, where the Assyrian monumental inscription says King Hezekiah, of Judah, gave the Assyrians lots of treasure to get the Assyrians to leave, after the Assyrians had devestated and looted other Judean cities?

I think the thread title needs to be changed. They haven't found proof that angels killed umpteen soldiers. Just that a battle might have taken place.

I'd give Mr. Occam a call to see what he suggests as a reason for dead soldiers.

The article doesn't say anything about human remains being found, just a perimeter wasll and pottery.

It appears the archaeologists identified a number of Assyrian camps.

I didn't see the bit where they (the archaeologists) discovered that angels killed 185,000 soldiers in a single night.

Did I miss something?

That’s very interesting. It doesn’t mean archaeologist discovered the existence of angels, but still interesting.

Obviously, archaeologists won't find evidence of the angel killing those soldiers. However, the location of the Assyrian camps found does indeed indicate that it is the same location as mentioned in Isaiah 37:36-38 and 2 Kings 19:35 and also 2 Chronicles 32:31

Until this archaeological evidence was found, there was not hardly any physical evidence to corroborate that this battle had actually occurred there outside of Jerusalem.

Was that it? I didn't read it. Imagine - a wall and some pottery.

I didn't see any Google Map references in those parts of the bible. What makes you say a wall and bits of pottery match what was said in the bible?

In my opinion, let’s say that this “proves” the Smiting Angel passages in the Bible, if people’s faith is so…that it needs “proof”, how strong is it, really?
It’s a red herring, if anything. My faith is not dependent on one story from the Old Testament :)

Look at the article where you will find photographic and written examples of the archaeological evidence.

Then why did you use the Daily Mail headline which insinuates that there was proof of 185,000 soldiers killed by angels?

The Daily Mail is a notoriously unreliable publication known for lying by omission, commission and insinuation. It is well known as the definitive tabloid news outlet.

Perhaps you should be a little more discriminating in your choice of sources.

The level of proof equivalent to saying the Harry Potter stories are true because London exists.

Ironically there are 2 top grade Rugby players named Harry Potter!

According to the Bible, those Assyrian soldiers were killed by the Angel of the Lord. Whether or not you believe the Bible is completely up to you.

The paper was peer reviewed.
The story checks out, so far as “we found something”, no angel feathers yet.

I'm not talking about believing the Bible.

I am talking about believing the Daily Mail.

I know where the archaeological evidence is. Where is the biblical information that says that was where it was?

I’d wager that there was a “Dobby” (or a dozen), as well

We’re pretty sure “something” happened with the Assyrians, (whether a king ransomed his city or an angel smote the “enemy”, doesn’t really enter into it).
This is great find. Both for atheists who will know more about why the Bible is “wrong”, and for Christian people will regard it as confirmation that their faith is grounded in reality, that wee bit more!

Win-win!
