Preparing Missionaries Come Here!

Hello,

I am a preparing missionary* and would like to connect with others who are preparing as well, regardless of where they're going. I'm going to a country in the 10/40 window (I know which one). I'm currently studying on my own, with the support of friends and my church, and don't have an agency. I've approached a couple, but haven't heard anything back yet. If I can join with one I will, if not I'm still going.

What about you? What are you doing to prepare? I've been reading missionary biographies, doing Bible study, and have read a few textbooks my church bought me. I have one book on the language, but am waiting to get clarification on some of the pronunciation (it's just a book, no audio) before I start because I know it's better to delay learning and learn it right then learn the language wrong and try to correct false pronunciation.

I'm hoping to move over there in mid to late 2012. What about you?

*I've decided to call myself a preparing missionary instead of a potential or prospective or other term, because that implies I may not go, and I know I will, and also reflects the fact that I am indeed preparing.

I do missions work myself - sometimes in areas that are difficult to access, or have higher risks. I also provide advice to missionaries who are working in countries whose governments are not friendly to Christians or westerners.

I commend you on your desire to serve the Lord! I am sure your service will be a blessing - both to you and those you visit.

May I suggest a few things ...

1. It would really help you to be connected with a church or ministry that can support you. In particular, a strong relationship with a home church is vital to any missions work that you do. Can I encourage you to discuss your goals with your own church? If you don't have a good home church right now, please consider finding one. You should really do this before you leave on any missions trip.

2. You will find it really helpful if you can make a temporary trip to the country that you plan to do missions work. Perhaps plan on a visit of 2-4 weeks, so you can see the precise area where you want to work, and meet local people. This type of "introductory trip" is enormously helpful - because it gives you a lot of specific information. You will be able to understand the exact situation of that country much better, you will be able to pick up helpful language resources, and you will know much better how to respond to peoples' needs. Otherwise, you may well discover (as I have many times) that reports in the media, and info in books, are really quite misleading and don't give you an accurate real-life picture.

Very best wishes to you!

Yes Gideon123's suggestion is very good. It is very important when going overseas to have your church from home praying for you and your mission. It is also good to set this in a system and have the prayer ministry from your local church dedicating some time every time they meet to all the missionary work sent out from your congregation.

I would suggest that you read a book that teaches about various cultures. Better, yet, if you can talk to a local (of the nation you are going to.)
