Sen. Patty Murray's (D-Wash.) legislation would require employers give workers 14 days of paid sick leave during public health emergencies. She tried to get unanimous consent on the legislation on Wednesday, which would have it bypass a vote, but Alexander said he could not support the bill.

Note to our foreign friends -- there is no federal requirement for paid sick leave in the US. Go be sick on your own time.

Awful. That would have been great aid.

Honestly, I'm generally in favor of the reasoning Alexander provided for his objection. I'm all for mandatory paid medical leave, but this is not the time to force employers to shoulder that burden. Some (Amazon, Google, Walmart, etc) can definitely take the hit, but many cannot, especially with the economy crashing. I'd be in favor of a federal aid package to provide paid leave during the current health crisis, coupled with a future rollout (2021 or 2022) of mandatory paid medical leave provided by employers.

After a day of negotiations and partisan brinkmanship, House Democrats and Trump administration officials were close to a final agreement Thursday evening on an economic stimulus package to address the widening impact of the coronavirus on American workers and businesses.

The deal — being forged by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin via frequent phone calls — is expected to eliminate insurance co-payments for COVID-19 testing and provide billions of dollars in aid to state and local governments for food programs and unemployment benefits.

It is also expected to include up to 14 days of sick pay for workers dealing with the coronavirus who don’t receive sick pay from their employers and up to three months’ leave for people who need to care for sick relatives.

The bill’s future could be uncertain in the Senate, where Republicans blasted an earlier version. But it’s likely that if the administration signs off on the measure, the GOP-controlled chamber will approve it. Most senators went home on Thursday while talks were still underway.

Even if the House passes a bill Friday, the Senate is unlikely to do anything further until Monday at the earliest.

Right, and a number of such companies have already done so due to the emergency, "Walmart, McDonald’s, Apple, Instacart, Uber, Lyft and Darden Restaurants, which operates the popular restaurant chain Olive Garden" (Independent). Amazon and Google are also on board.

Trump and the Federal government are not the saviors of the world. They can do some things but a great deal comes down to the private sector, local community decisions, responsible citizens, and on-the-ground footwork.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) blocked an attempt by Senate Democrats to quickly pass legislation on Wednesday that would require employers to provide paid sick leave.

The issue of paid sick leave has jumped into the spotlight amid growing concerns about a coronavirus outbreak within the United States. Individuals exposed to the virus are being recommended to quarantine for at least two weeks.

Sen. Patty Murray's (D-Wash.) legislation would require employers give workers 14 days of paid sick leave during public health emergencies. She tried to get unanimous consent on the legislation on Wednesday, which would have it bypass a vote, but Alexander said he could not support the bill.

That's right. Pull your own selves up by your bootstraps! Asking for help like a sissy ....

You missed the entire point of that post.

I may have to leave my job because I am at risk if this thing gets more widespread as I am already at high risk of contracting it because of my job. I live paycheck to paycheck. What am I supposed to do for pay?
I'm sure the cartel will buy some of your organs.

Most republicans are the pick yourself back up by your boot straps and just work extra when you're back on your feet kind.

yeah, but many jobs will fire you if you don't show up for work even if you are dying....that one woman that gave her boss a kidney transplant or something like that, then was fired for taking too long to recover from it.

If you are sick stay home common sense. Frankly an employer with common sense would SEND you home.

yeah instead they fire you for not having good work ethic, since there is no protection for being SICK.

Well, if you are actually dying that is to say you are terminally ill often you have to leave any now because you are not fit for work in those cases you very likely qualify for disability.

If everyone is staying home before they are scared of getting sick, then they wouldn't get sick leave anyway would they?

Democrats are determined to bring in Socialism, even if it means they Legislate
one by one, everything to the Government

And republicans are determined to make it so that employee's are just work slaves for their employer overlords with no rights and just the scum they are.

I do not know any one who thinks that IF you need help, but I know plenty of people who are NOT OK with the help being abused.

Your just a idiot, the common flu will put you out for 2-4 weeks, not fatal, but it's going to make going to work impossible and ruin the work by causing everyone to be sick.

If an employer is smart they will allow you to take time off otherwise it will hurt their business.

guess what they arn't, especially for high turn over jobs, they will just fire frank who doesn't come in when sick, because there are 30 other people wanting his job, republicans have this bizzaro land idea of where emplyee's are at the whim of employers who will fire you at a seconds notice if they think it will hurt them.
