So for the Creationists, whats the deal with Ostrich wings? They cant fly, but fit well within Evolutionary Theory. Intelligent design? Maybe God accidentaly added a too many numbers on his calculater when he was trying to calculate the correct weight and wing ratio for optimum flight performance.

If you have ever studied cartooning, the numbers most likely come up to be just right for comic effect. Perhaps God likes to see us smile.

Genesis 2:19
Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name.

Perhaps God showed the animals to Adam, not only to name them, but to see what Adams reaction would be. Then after showing Adam all of His creation, for a grand finale, God created Eve. As they say she was kinda like a man with a little but more WOW in her, so Adam decided to call her Women.

The wings of all flightless birds are always a good example to squelch the old "what use is half a wing" arguement used by many creationists.

You can also use the redundant and tiny legs of the Transvaal Snake Lizard to counter "what good is half a leg".

If so, then what are the ancient hebrew words for wallaby, kiwi, ostrich, moose, and - well just about any other animal that does not inhabit the middle east.

What I think is especially interesting about flightless birds' wings is the tremendous diversity. The fact that some of the Phorusrhacoid terror birds that used to live in South America had arms with unfused (or considerably less-fused) fingers (sort of like Archaeopteryx or Confuciusornis). Curious how God gave them hands to use but not to other carnivorous ground birds (the Cassowary for instance). Also, some ratites (the Kiwi for instance) have no external wings whatsoever. And this is from the God that likes "common design"?

Very interesting IMO

The foolish ostrich when pursued by the hunter, and utterly unable to escape, is said to hide its head in the sand fancying that it is secure from the enemy which it cannot see.

We can turn a blind eye to sin but our sin will find us out.
Why did you resurrect a thread dead, lo, these 20 years?

Especially to get a fundamental ostrich behaviour so unequivocally wrong.

Ostriches actually use their wings to help them maneuver and come to a quick stop when running. It took less than 30 seconds to find this information online, much less time than it took to create this thread I’m sure.

The ostrich is mentioned in Job 39:13-18, so there must have been a Hebrew word for the bird.

In reading the text, it sure seams like God didn't think much of His Ostrich creation.

Job 39:13 Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and feathers unto the ostrich?

Adam Clarke's Commentary said:
Though the wings of the ostrich, says he, cannot raise it from the ground, yet by the motion here alluded to, by a perpetual vibration, ... they give it a rapidity of running beyond that possessed by any other animal in the world.
