Hello folks. Today's devotional is a long one, so let's get straight to it.
Date | June 7, 2024 | On Fire for the Lord |
Verse | Psalm 39:3-7 (NKJV): "My heart was hot within me; While I was musing, the fire burned. Then I spoke with my tongue: “Lord, make me to know my end, And what is the measure of my days, That I may know how frail I am. Indeed, You have made my days as hand breadths, And my age is as nothing before You; Certainly every man at his best state is but vapor. Surely every man walks about like a shadow; Surely they busy themselves in vain; He heaps up riches, And does not know who will gather them. And now, Lord, what do I wait for? My hope is in You." Matthew 5:16 (NKJV): "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Hebrews 12:28-29 (NKJV): "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire." |
Explanation | Psalm 39:3-7 is a prayer of David expressing his awareness of his mortality and frailty before God. He recognizes that his life is short and that every person is like vapor or a shadow in comparison to God's eternal existence. David pleads with the Lord to grant him knowledge of his end and the measure of his days, acknowledging that he is but a fragile and transient being. Matthew 5:16, on the other hand, calls on Christians to let their light shine before others, showcasing the good works that stem from their faith. This passage emphasizes the importance of living a life that reflects the love and grace of God, so that others may be drawn to Him through our actions. Being "on fire" for Jesus and spreading God's kingdom means living a life fully committed to Him and sharing His love and message with the world around us. Hebrews 12:28-29 emphasizes the importance of living a godly life with reverence and awe before God. The passage suggests that we should strive to serve Him acceptably, recognizing that He is a consuming fire, full of power and majesty. As we serve Him, we are to do so with a sense of fear and reverence, understanding that our relationship with Him is not casual or trivial. |
Societal Relevance | In the 21st century, where things may seem tough, sometimes one’s eagerness for the Lord may wane. It is normal to have plateaus and rough times in our spiritual journeys. We are all human, and we will encounter challenges and setbacks, even in our walk with God. However, it is essential to remember that God is faithful and that He is always with us, even in the midst of our struggles. We can lean on Him for strength and guidance, trusting that He will see us through and that He will use our experiences to shape us into the person He intends us to be. Please remember to set aside time each day to communicate with God through prayer. This can include praying for yourself, your loved ones, and for the needs of the world. To be eager for the Lord in modern society, Christians can do the following:
