The New York state legislature's action may reignite a political controversy over gas stoves that heated up earlier this year. That arose after U.S. Consumer Product Safety commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. said in January natural gas stoves are "a hidden hazard" and suggested unsafe products might be banned.
Trumka later walked back the statement saying, "CPSC isn't coming for anyone's gas stoves."
Just like forcing a conversion to electric vehicles, this idea is not well thought out. First of all it is an infringement on the rights of the citizenry. Gas stove cooking is popular, particularly in Asian communities. It is not fair to discriminate. Electric stoves and electric heat are not energy efficient.
Power plants at this time are mostly powered by fossil fuels. Converting fossil fuels into electricity is a waste of power. Which form of energy pollutes the most throughout the whole process is debatable. That debate should take place first. Then it needs to be considered what resources are available in the United States, so that we can once again attain and keep the energy independence we had under President Trump.
