Navy relieves captain who raised alarm about COVID-19 on ship

The Navy announced it has relieved the captain who sounded the alarm about an outbreak of COVID-19 aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

Capt. Brett Crozier, who commands the Roosevelt, an aircraft carrier with a crew of nearly 5,000, was relieved of his command Thursday, but he will keep his rank and remain in the Navy.

I understand why they did this, still, it is a shame a good man has this happen to him.

I understand why this happened as well. He was a skipper with a high level security clearance commanding a critical strategic Carrier Strike Group (CSG) who decided to send his grievances on an unsecured email network alerting our adversaries his CSG was combat ineffective. He endangered his entire command more than the virus ever could have.

A complete disgrace to the uniform and he should be considered for UCMJ action.

We won’t mention his negligence allowing shore leave in Vietnam with confirmed COVID19 cases.

Capt. Crozier knew that he would be relieved of command for writing the letter. He did it anyway, in the hopes of saving the lives of his sailors.

I think the fact this letter was leaked to the media is the cause for the relief.

Commanders send all kinds of warnings and assessments to superiors often. What we have is one side of the story and Esper made that clear yesterday.

The fact precautionary measures were not taken in proper secure messaging, our adversaries found out through the world media that a Strategic National deployed asset became combat ineffective.

If this was a case of a questionable port call in Vietnam in light of the spread of COVID19, then I think he would be given a reprimand and reassigned.

No he did not. Pacific Command was working the transfer of infected sailors. The skipper saw fit to have his letter be leaked to the press allowing the entire CSG to be vulnerable to attack.

He not only jeopardized the crew with the questionable port call, he made sure the media knew his CSG was combat ineffective during a strategic deployment.

I know civilians may see this a different way but Crozier was derelict in his duties on two counts. The port call and exposing his CSG to attack as the world found out they were unable to defend themselves.
