(ugh...I wrote this once already but I guess it got lost in forum purgatory)
In this passage of scripture you find a number of examples of people who declare their willingness to follow Jesus in a manner of discipleship. However, each gave an excuse as to why they can't come quite yet because they want to finish something first. As a result of wanting to remain in their own lives, rather than follow Jesus, He told them that if you look back to your old life, then you are not fit to follow Him.
In contrast, consider Matthew 4:18-22:
"Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. And He said to them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him."
To me, this verse describes a persons worthiness of service, not their state of salvation.
Intersting story...well I believe God writes his laws, commands, and yes, plans on our hearts!I've been reading this with interest, this verse was used with my Pastor when I asked him for advice/counsel concerning a situation I was facing.
My sister and brother purchased a home for me in my hometown to be closer to them, I was at the other end of the country and they said take the time you need to settle in and find employment then you can pay us back.
My hometown's economic status is dull at best. I had a very good job where I had been living, but I was homesick for family and had been asking God for 3 yrs to open a door for me or pave a way to return there.
This seemed the opportunity because, well, if you knew my family, this isn't an everyday occurence, we were becoming a family again.
Anyhow, a year later, no job, offer to work again at the place I was working out west came in. I didn't know what to do?
I sought the Lord aggressively, after alot of crying, crying out, vacumming (which I do when I'm upset - lol ), He said to me, 'Look what I've given you', I had been looking at my big back yard, pool, garage. "I'm about to do something so big you can't image". This was over a year ago now.
Well, then the scripture Proverbs 3 5:6 - "Trust in the Lord......", so I sought godly counsel from my pastor, and a couple of trusted others.
My pastor is an excellent person, godly, etc..... and with others words, he added the "plow" scripture and about not returning to my other job, that's over, look ahead, God brought you here.
This hasn't ended yet, I found employment just above minimum wage and still, I have more savings than when I had the other job. It's very strange, and yet, I still think of my other job and I get upset with myself for thinking this.
I wish I could settle this once and for all in my mind, I'm not stuck with this job, there will be others, but the plow scripture bothered me because I didn't want to offend God in any way, so I'm walking in faith right now, by a thread ...........almost 2 yrs now. BTW, I have had some good interviews, but somehow, the positions have eluded me.
So, please continue with your interpretations of this scripture, they have been very uplifting for me. Thanks, Di
PS. I didn't give my interpretations of it 'cause I feel torn/biased right now.
I guess I have a different belief, because of my own experience.
I walked away from faith altogether a number of years ago during a crisis in my life. I felt as though God had abandoned me. I never had any intention of being involved in any religion ever again. But, to make a long story short, several years later, I recommitted my life to God. So, I definitely believe that a person can walk away and later return. Kind of like getting re-married, or something like that.
Thanks! I have a lot to learn, but God is good! I feel so in awe of God at times!
Jesus words underscore the fact that His message of the kingdom of God was more important than anything elseeven family members.
Jesus servants should not have divided interests, like a farmer who begins plowing and looks back.Since Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, the man had to make up his mind right then as to what he was going to do.
Interesting that we do not know the outcome of any of these three conversations
