Kamala Harris Copies Trump’s No Taxes on Tips Campaign Promise

Vice President Kamala Harris copied a campaign promise first announced by former President Donald Trump to eliminate taxes on tips.

During a campaign rally in Nevada on Saturday, Harris acknowledged that Culinary Union Local 226 was at the rally, and she continued on to vow that if elected president in November, she would work to “raise the minimum wage” and “eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

Harris’s promise comes after Trump announced in June during a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, that if elected president, his administration would “not charge taxes on tips.”

“I know Culinary 226 is in the house,” Harris told the crowd. “And, the culinary union, as everyone in Nevada knows, they have helped lead the way in our country for workers’ rights and workers dignity. I have to say, for years I’ve been so proud to work by your side. When I was Attorney General of California, we worked together to crack down on wage theft. When I was a United States senator we fought together for paid family leave and medical leave, and earlier this year right here in Vegas we celebrated your historic contract win. And, it is my promise to everyone here, when I am President, we will continue our fight for working families of America. Including to raise the minimum wage, and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.”

During a roundtable event at an African-American church in Michigan in June, Trump again vowed that his administration was “not going to tax tips.”

“Tell your waiters and waitresses, anybody else getting tips, ’cause they’re… a lot of people get tips,” Trump said. “Car attendants and caddies, and a lot of different people get tips. We are not going to tax tips – the tax immediately is coming off.”

Obviously Harris has a long pro-worker pro-union history, and her comments to culinary workers were more comprehensive.
Kitchen workers aren't tipped, but I'm sure they could use higher wages.
And once the public realized tips wouldn't be taxed, they'd resent it and probably tip less.
Some people are very generous tippers, but there are plenty of bad ones.
When my daughter was a server, once she received a fake five dollar bill saying on its back: "Disappointed? You won't be when you accept Jesus As your personal Lord and Savior." She posted it on FB to "out" hypocrites.
Did these CINOs really think cheating hardworking college students would convert them?
They sold these fake bills in the CINO *Christian in name only* bookstore in the mall where her restaurant was.

How very original of her. She would be better served to actually answer some policy questions from the press.

Not taxing tips would be a good thing ... don't care who would implement it.

The thing about the Harris/Waltz campaign ... thus far ... is it's largely based on emotion and hardly any actual defined policies and how they would be accomplished .. perhaps that is yet to come ... we will see. We are facing some serious issues and need to see what the serious approaches to resolving them would be ... from both candidates.

It's not like Trump has set the bar very high for cogent policy discussion. Can you name any other policies Trump has promised on the campaign trail?

I can ... I watch his rallys!
These are the things Trump has promised to do:

~ Seal the border and stop the migrant invasion

~ Carry out the largest deportation operation in American history

~ End inflation, and make America affordable again

~ Make America the dominant energy producer in the world

~ Stop outsourcing, and turn the United States into a manufacturing superpower

~ Large tax cuts for workers, and no tax on tips

~ Defend our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, and our fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to keep and bear arms

~ Prevent World War III, restore peace in Europe and in the Middle East, and build a great iron dome missile defense shield over our entire country -- all made in America

~ End the weaponization of government against the American people

~ Stop the migrant crime epidemic, demolish the foreign drug cartels, crush gang violence, and lock up violent offenders

~ Rebuild our cities, including Washington DC, making them safe, clean, and beautiful again

~ Strengthen and modernize our military, making it the strongest and most powerful in the world

~ Keep the U.S. dollar as the world's reserve currency

~ Fight for and protect Social Security and Medicare with no cuts, including no changes to the retirement age

~ Cancel the electric vehicle mandate and cut costly and burdensome regulations

~ Cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology, and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children

~ Keep men out of women's sports

~ Deport pro-Hamas radicals and make our college campuses safe and patriotic again

~ Secure our elections, including same day voting, voter identification, paper ballots, and proof of citizenship

~ Unite our country by bringing it to new and record levels of success

No taxes on tips is a dumb policy when your budget is busted. It won't stop with those waiting tables either. If this passes skilled tradesman, lawncare, hairdressers, etc will all be asking for "tips." Government discriminating towards one group over another is wrong. Its a silly campaign promise that will hopefully never pass. If you never pay social security on tips either, it will hurt your social security outcomes. But hey it sounds great. Might as well offer a deduction for dogs and cats. I am sure that would buy some votes.

Any tax relief for an over taxed nation is a good thing. Maybe politicians should stop wasting our money so the tax burden does not have to be so high.

If you earn it, they tax it
If you spend it, they tax it
If you save it, they tax it
If you invest it, they tax it
If you build it, they tax it
If you sell it, they tax it
If you live in it, they tax it
If you drive it, they tax it
If you eat it, they tax it
If you give it away, they tax it
When you die, they tax it

There should be another solution for a busted budget!

Yes, you are right government needs to cut spending. That is the bigger part of the equation. But neither Trump or Harris have a plan for cutting spending and cutting taxes with borrowed money is what I call tax deferment, not a true tax cut. Also, cutting taxes should be equal at least for those in the same income bracket. To single out restaurant and hospitality workers for breaks is unfair to other workers in their bracket. Also, no one has said who is going to plan for things when their social security comes up short because they no longer are paying social security on their tips.
