Well not according to Grassley's letter. The issue under investigation is... why are people getting tax free luxuries? Not wether they are mis-spending their money or not.
The tax exempt status of Churches and these ministries exists to protect religious and charitable giving. Giving to the Church as an institution, and to activities that benefit all of society because of their charity.
The issue is not that someone gave an expensive gift to Joyce Meyer.. the issue is that they did it without paying taxes on it. If any one of you were to give me a gift above a certain value, the government would get a slice of it through taxes. If any of us were to give a gift to Joyce Meyer, personally, taxes would be paid on it.
However, because Joyce Meyer has a tax exempt ministry, a person can give an expensive gift to Joyce's ministry, and not pay taxes on it. If that gift is legitimately for the ministry.. then its not a problem. However, if that gift is actually for Joyce Meyer personally, then its tax evasion and its illegal.
The government could care less if some tele-evangelist drives a rolls royce, or has expensive furniture.. but the government does care if they have those things without paying taxes on them because they are using their ministry for the purposes of avoiding paying taxes on personal luxury items.
One of the benefits of incorporating oneself - for profit or not - is having the personal use of a corporate asset in complete legality. A loophole perhaps, but one that is difficult to close, monitor, or enforce. The issue under investigation is... why are people getting tax free luxuries? If I ever have a $23,000 toilet, it'd better come with someone there to wipe my.....er, never mind.![]()

Questioning Christian said:Wow, she must be popping out $23,000.00 dookie!!!
$23,000?
You can get a old table like that down the market for a tenner
The Woodworms dont care if it Queen Anne's or Queen Latifah's!
What?? Who determines what is extravagance and what is not? You?Amen. I wonder who pocketed the remaining $24,990!![]()
I can see how anyone can justify using the Lord's money for something like that (or not selling it to use it for ministry work). Whether it's a $23K toilet or a $23K piece of furniture, the extravagance is still the same.![]()
Not true in US nonprofits...One of the benefits of incorporating oneself - for profit or not - is having the personal use of a corporate asset in complete legality. A loophole perhaps, but one that is difficult to close, monitor, or enforce.
ROTFL......![]()

For $23, 000, I want more than just wiping brother! I want gas chromatography analysis of my.........umm.......gas. I want a computer analysis and print out of my.......ummm........crap. I want analysis of my wee. I want my fortune told, and after I've washed my hands, I want a fortune cookie, something like, "You've been passing stinky sinkies. You will soon be passing fluffy floaties".
But it was a ministry donation. Shouldn't something like that be sold and used for the poor??What?? Who determines what is extravagance and what is not? You?
(For the record, personally, I wouldn't want to own a $23K piece of furniture, but I wouldn't judge someone who does, either.)
Perhaps not in the letter of the law......Not true in US nonprofits...
Everyone is overlooking the fact that.
SHE DID NOT BUY IT. IT WAS DONATED TO THE MINISTRY AND IS IN USE IN THE MINISTRY HEADQUARTERS.
Yes, it's abused, but that still doesn't make it legal or moral...especially for Christian nonprofits.Perhaps not in the letter of the law......
For example, big time evangelist flies the corporate jet to a revival meeting in Florida.....close to Disneyworld....how convenient.
I've used our corporate jet for business that dropped me off in Anaheim for a meeting and.....
Giving a $20 Timex to a pastor in a Third World country can be argued as being extravagant....that money can be sold to feed the poor. Wasn't that also Judas' argument? But it was a ministry donation. Shouldn't something like that be sold and used for the poor??
It's one thing to pour out riches on Jesus (extravagant oil to annoint his feet) and another to hoard/keep riches for ourselves.
How has everyone forgotten Matthew 6??
So, there will be no standards of what's extravagant for a ministry person to take from the tithes given to their ministry? If they get "Bill Gates rich" from their ministry, that's OK with you?? There has to be accoutability somewhere.
