He didn’t tell her to cross dress but to dress appropriately for her mission. She did not do it to pass as male or deceive for sexual reasons and neither did God. In medieval thought she was guilty before she was tried. Their thought was it went against Scripture. How St Joan of Arc dressed and cross dressing is a completely different thing where the motives are completely different. It was decided she was guilty beforehand.

Canonizing a saint is an infallible decision. There are long investigations and trials before a pope can canonize someone.

A long time after St. Joan of Arc’s death. They looked at her case again and found her worthy of Sainthood. So as far as Popes mistakenly canonizing someone would mean a whole lot of clergy were mistaken.

I‘m perplexed about something but I don’t know how to word my question, for fear I’m being disrespectful to the Church. Joan of Arc believed God told her to cross dress. Why would God do that?
Purely from a practical perspective, Joan had to cross more than 100 kms of enemy (Burgundian) occupied territory from Alsace to reach the Dauphin. Law and order had broken down there. Bandits, deserters and mercenaries were raping and terrorising the common folk. Joan cutting her hair short and dressing as a male was a practical move. Then came the issue of leading an army into battle. Wearing a dress instead of armour and riding side-saddle was impractical in the circumstances. Riding a horse side saddle while wearing plate armour would have almost certainly resulted in a fall from height, and the plate armour would have caused her serious injury.

What about her having never married or never having had a boyfriend?

That’s not unusual. Many women went into the nunnery to avoid marriage. That’s not a sin.

There are negative things written about her.
There are negative things written about everyone. Especially those of Faith. Nothing new there. People write that Jonathan and David were lovers, etc. I pay little attention to those that preach a different thing than what the Church teaches.

Why did she do things that were considered men’s activities.

Because God gave her a mission. She was only 19 when she passed. Until she was given her mission, she was a regular female of the time. You should read about her from the Church. Not from sources trying to convince you she was lesbian or transgender. You have to watch what you take in. :praying:

Judge Deborah (Judges Ch 4&5) (a married woman) was prepared to lead the Israelite army against the enemies of God.
Yael (another woman) ended that military campaign of Israels.
