Is it wrong to pray for healing for an animal?

My dog has been very sick for a long time, no one can figure out what's wrong with her. She has a horrible itch all over her body, she scratches and bites and mutilates herself because of it. Her hairs falling it, she's just miserable. The vet gives her medicine that works for a season, but when it finishes she goes right back to scratching. My family can't afford to treat her or keep buying for medicine that clearly isn't working, we don't know what to do.

So I started praying for her! I even lay hands on her and pray as if she were a person. I know she can't respond to or understand my prayers, I know she can't have faith to be healed, but I can, right? I'm not just asking she be healed so that she's happy, but for my family as well. She has been such a blessing to our family and has held us together through some tough times, she's an amazing gift from God.

Do you think it's okay that I pray that God heal her or is it pointless? Do you believe God would ever heal an animal because of a human's prayers?

I just don't know where else to turn and I know God is all-powerful, so I thought I should pray. But sometimes I doubt God would even care about healing an animal when there are so many sick people out there . . .

Your thoughts?

God Bless

No. It isn't wrong at all.
God cares about the things that matter to us, even the 'little' things.

But I had to learn this lesson myself, and I did, years ago when one of my cats had a growth suddenly appear on her nose. We feared cancer. My heart was nearly broken at the thought.

When hearing me discuss this, the little boy then living next door said 'we should pray'. At the time, I hadn't thought of it. Maybe it seemed silly to me to 'bother' God with prayer for my cat. But this little boy prayed, as did his mom, and me, too.

And the surgery went extremely well, and at a surprisingly low cost to me, and with a vet that happened to be a believer who afterwards gave credit to God for the success of the procedure. It was all wonderful, how God took care of my cat.

Yes, pray.

I will say a prayer for your dog, too.
:)

Several years back James Herriot wrote a series of books about his veterinary practice. The books were all titled, one after another, from a passage in the Book of Psalms. One that comes to mind right now is "All things great and small", and to my mind it gives reason to believe that God cares for all the life He has made. The last book in the series was "The Lord God made them all".

Given that passage in Psalms--- praying for your dog's healing is certainly acceptable in the sight of God. He sees, He hears and He cares.

"Do you believe God would ever heal an animal because of a human's prayers?"

REminds me of the account Ern Baxter gave about the Christian trainer in Florida that takes care of a group of Budweiser Clydesdales. One of 'em was seriously sick, and they weren't sure why so the fellow called Ern, and asked him to pray for the Horse - who immediately recovered.

He was Criticized by the "Religious folks" for praying for an animal, and in particular, one owned by a BEER company.

His answer was: "O.K. - if you don't believe that God would heal a horse, then LET YOUR HORSE DIE!!! God heals horses for folks that ask Him to."

No, I've heard and read of people doing this with answer to their prayer(s). For example, John Wesley prayed for his horse. A key-person in the pentecostal revival in my country (Sweden), together with someone else, prayed for a sick cow that was about to die - it was commanded to "Stand, in the name of Jesus" or something like that, and it stood up.

He also prayed for a horse if I remember right, or if it was a cow again.

"...man and beast you save, O Lord." (Psalm 36:6 ESV).

God would want for His sons whatever would make them happy. Sons will be walking as Jesus walked, will be willingly led by the Spirit and will have an ongoing relationship with God.

Sounds like mange. Embarrassing for the owner, but common.

Take a look at the laws on animal care in scriptures. There is a respect for the needs of each animal. Even when they were used for work, they still had mandatory days off, fair feeding times, adequate time for calves to be with their mothers.

Exodus 22

31 "You shall be holy men to Me... you shall throw it to the dogs.

It is intriguing that in the Psalms we read that Messiah returns riding on a cherub.......In Revelation 19 we read that Messiah returns riding on a white horse.......perhaps just as humans are made in the image of God so also animals may well be made in the image of some types/species of angelic life?????!!!

Interesting thought! When you quoted those, I also noticed how it was considered normal to sit on the animal. Some animals like to be needed, and team up with humans. Like humans like to throw food to dogs and squirrels.

So prayer for their health seems only natural.

I don't see anything wrong with praying for our pets. After all, God created them, too, and they are living beings that breathe, eat, sleep, and get sick. They may not be able to reason (to the degree a human can reason, anyway), but they do have feelings and have a need to be loved. Animals, in turn, are a help to their masters in that they bring joy and make great companions. There is actually Scripture about taking care of our animals, and that is found in Proverbs 12:10. Vince53 already mentioned it: the righteous man regards the life of his animal. This tells me that God expects us to care for the animals placed in our care, and yes, that includes praying for them.

Just my opinion.

Makes me think of that text. He can eat the crumbs.

But He answered and said, “It is not good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the little dogs.”
27 And she said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Then Jesus answered and said to her, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be to you as you desire.

I don't think it's wrong at all. Your dog is one of God's creations as well.

Have you considered this could be due to a Gluten food allergy? <That link will show you a pop-up window where you can ask one of the sites Veterinarians Now, about your dog. :)
Or perhaps it's a contact allergy. This dog forum may help. I've linked it to a discussion about that very thing. "Dog Rash"

With regard to the prior mention of Gluten and/or food allergy, what your dog eats is digested and feeds her whole body just as in humans and what we eat. And just as we have food allergies so too could she.

Other resources that may help answer your prayers:

Skin Allergies and Reactions in Dogs

My son's dog got hit by a car and they carried him to my yard. As I stood there I felt lead to draw a circle around him with a stick (he loked at deaths door) and pray for him and he got up and was perfectly well. So the answer is YES!
Proverbs 12:10 (ESV)
"Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel."

Exodus 9:7 (NIV)
"Pharaoh investigated and found that not even one of the animals of the Israelites had died. Yet his heart was unyielding and he would not let the people go."

I will pray for an animal without a doubt, I love my dog.

My grandmother has told me of stories of her dad requesting prayer for there mule when he was sick. Her father was a farmer, if the mule was sick, he could not pull the plow, planting could not go on as needed. The thing that makes me smile is others in the church did the same for there mules, oxen, and such. :)

My grandmother has even prayed for her car to keep running, and God has kept it going when is no way to explain how the car was still going.
