Is is okay for christians to watch everything?

Well, I have been thinking about this for some time now, and therefore I would like to ask you guys what you think..so, do you think it is okay for christians to watch violent movies, movies that arent good for you. And tv series for example filled with betrayal, jealousy and such. Because we all know that this doesnt give us anything, except entertainment. It is easy to think that we arent effected by it, but I guess that isnt entirely true..

So, what do you think ?

Personally I think it is important to not let the television controle you, and be aware of what really is important, and not just believe fully what the media tells you is. :)

Well, if you really want to watch something like that the best way to do that is to learn something that would benfit your Christian life. Look up What Is C2? on youtube and watch it.

I'm deep into Christianity and I also watch CSI Miami. Maybe you can find a lesson in your fav show. As long as you keep your faith in Jesus and not let the bad stuff be an influence on you, watching stuff like that shouldn't be a problem.

God can turn ALL things for His glory. While I do believe that people should be a little more selective about what they watch (I firmly believe that most of the so-called reality shows are pure evil), lessons can be learned from the most unlikely sources.

Case in point:

My young daughters love the movie "Yellow Submarine". While not bad per se, not exactly Christian viewing, if you know what I mean. We were discussing it one evening. My 7-year-old was summarizing the movie, "the Blue Meanies hated music and tried to ruin Pepperland, but the Beatles saved the day and made them nice."

To which my 5-year-old replied: "Yeah: the Beatles led the Blue Meanies to God."

We don't do t.v., don't even own one. One reason is this: it is too hard to find anything that doesn't expose you to sex, lust, adultery, stealing, lying, cheating, witchcraft, etc....yes, we're adults but why entertain sin and justify it by saying we can handle it because we know what OUR standards are? Why submit ourselves to that? The other reason, and most important is this: it's more important to read, study and talk about God's word. How many times do people say they don't have time to read the Bible or listen to a sermon, yet they have time for t.v. and films? T.v also takes time away from our intimacy and conversation. To us, it is worthless and more than that, damaging.
This is just how WE feel about it.

I used to watch loads of sinful tv programs, after being saved I just don't like watching most of them anymore, and as a result hardly watch any of them. For example used to watch How I Met Your Mother, well the other night I watched 5min of an episode and was just absolutely bored, because well I just don't find that sort of thing appealing anymore. Still own a tv, like to watch sports and news and some history shows, and maybe some stuff that is about real things, but other then that not really.

No I don't want to watch those shows, I don't watch much TV. I mostly watch the news and House and Garden, Lifestyle shows and documentaries.

I have my own opinions on what we as Christians should be watching and to every person its different. I think what really matters is your relationship with God. We are all in different places in our journeys with God.

One thing I did when weeding out my movie and music collection is ask myself if its a movie I would want to watch if God was actually physically beside me. I think sometimes its easy for us as Christians to forget that even though we can't see Him with our eyes it doesn't mean He's still not right there and watching or listening with you.

In my opinion its something personal between God and each person what we choose to watch and let into our minds ... its your choice. If your not sure about something .. there may be a reason! Ask God to show you what He wants!

It depends how said Christian interprets their religion, and of course the TV they watch. I mean, if one wants to be proper, watching shows that teach witchcraft and Satanism aren't really Christian oriented, but stuff like the Blue Meanie isn't evil. I don't get why Harry Potter is so reviled, but that's just my two cents.


Its not a religion .. and its not (in my opinion) about our interpretation. Its very much so a relationship and its about what God calls us to in His Word. Like I've already said .. everyone is in different places on their journey.

I'm not sure what Blue Meanie is .. but as for Harry Potter ... its because it falls into the category you mentioned in your previous sentence. It is about witchcraft.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what they were referencing, but the Blue Meanies were the bad guys in the Beatles' animated movie, "Yellow Submarine". The Meanies hated anything having to do with beauty or music, so they took over the peaceful, beautiful, musical town of Pepperland...and the Beatles came to the rescue.

It's one of my 5-year-old's all-time favorite movies.

It depends how moderate you are. It isn't teaching you to be Satanist and reject Jesus; it's a little bit more complex than Peter Pan, just the whole "wonder and magic" genre.

This is another issue in which every Christian's opinions seem to differ greatly. I definitely believe that a Christian TV watcher should have some standards as to what they do watch. There are some things out there that are, without a doubt, total garbage. But we also have to remember that some of the tamest programs (many of them old) have things that we aren't going to agree with completely (yet we can appreciate the message as a whole). And there are some Christians who don't agree with TV at all; that is their conviction, and for them it is a stumbling block (on the other hand, such people should be careful not to condemn others who just don't happen to have been convicted in the same way).

But what we should do is follow the Lord's leading in this situation, and listen to our hearts. Any uneasy feeling that may come along when watching a given program could be a sign that we are better off not watching such a program. This same test can be applied to other issues we face in our walks with the Lord.

Romans 14 is a good guideline to go by on how to handle this, and other similar issues, as a whole. I understand it mentions eating meat, but verse 1 mentions "doubtful things", which can cover just about any debatable, "iffy" issue in the realm of Christianity.

So, using this as my basis--it's not okay to watch everything (because there are channels dedicated to pornography). But most things you would be able to watch, as long as your theological strength is good enough to withstand the onslaught from the evils of society.

I apologize for jumping in, but I have to agree with you 100% on this one. Its true. You cant really find anything "clean" to watch anymore because clean garbage is still garbage. That being said, they've even perverted Childrens Cartoons.

I have always been a believer that Television is not evil in itself, but that some shows should be discouraged. Now, I don't think that watching them is evil or anything, but I just choose not to. I also think it is important for parents to choose what is right for their kids to watch, and not just rely on a little government rating on the top left hand side of the television
