Is Black Sabbath Satanic?

Many people say they are because they use references to Satan in a few of their early songs such as:

Black Sabbath
NIB
War Pigs

etc..

I honestly know for a fact that they are not satan worshipers. Here is some proof:

(Lyrics from After Forever)

Could it be you're afraid of what your friends might say
If they knew you believe in God above?
They should realize before they criticize
that God is the only way to love

Also, they wear silver crosses. Why would they wear those if they followed Satan? One more thing, in their one self titled song, Black Sabbath, Ozzy sings as if he deeply fears Satan, rather than wanting to follow him.

Discuss.

It suppose it's only "satanic" if you make it so. If I chose to do so, I could get bad things out of a lot of the different bands I listen to. But as long as Black Sabbath does not corrupt your thinking purely, it would be fine. It's your call.

Are the members of Black Sabbath satanic? I don't really know enough about them to make that call.

Princeton Wordnet defines "Satanic" with two definitions, as:

(adj) demonic, diabolic, diabolical, fiendish, hellish, infernal, satanic, unholy(extremely evil or cruel; expressive of cruelty or befitting hell) "something demonic in him--something that could be cruel"; "fires lit up a diabolic scene"; "diabolical sorcerers under the influence of devils"; "a fiendish despot"; "hellish torture"; "infernal instruments of war"; "satanic cruelty"; "unholy grimaces"

Satanic (of or relating to Satan) "Satanic verses"

You could easily argue both ways. My advice would be to listen to Black Sabbath if you like it, but don't let it corrupt you as a Christian.

The whole point of their music when they came out was just to scare. 1970 was during the so called hippie era, and they wanted to stand out.
Are you just really young?

Not really the point at all. The 70's were not the hippie era. And they didn't stand out. There were a lot of heavy metal bands at the time. :D

I didn't really mean the whole 70's decade. I strictly meant the year 1970. Infact, their two "satanic" songs were written in 1969. I would assume 1969 was definitely a year of that movement, hence Woodstock. Also, watch Easy Rider.

Putting the "hippie" stuff aside, they still wanted to stand out back then, and sell records. If their first album were to come out this year, it would not be surprising, at all. And yeah I don't really know much, I was born way too late.

Well I can tell you that the song "war pigs" is not satanic at all because they aren't glorifying satan. Look at the lyrics, they are saying how the war pigs are bad and raging war with eveyone, and opening up the world to satan.....talking about satan in a negative sence is NOT satanic....

I like that song, it reminds me of GW Bush.

My two cents: Bands portray themselves as satanic simply to sell more records to teens.

Not entirely true. I know many undeground black metal bands who are orthodix satanists. The band in my sig, especially.

As a former secular metalhead and a christian metalhead now, Black Sabbath is a great band but evil is the center of there message. Make any excuse you want but it is what it is.

It's a joke and at worse a show-act. C'mon, after everything Ozzy's pulled, who really takes him seriously? They make fun of things including aspects of religion, but they're not actually promoting Satanis or anything of the sort.
