I am not sure where to begin here, but I have seen both men and women, and children doing this dance. Twerking is like sexuality, where one has to show restraint. In other words, there is a time and place for everything. It is one thing to twerk at a club with other 20-somethings, but to do the same dance in front of your children, on a graveyard, and in a church would make it sinful in my opinion because it is so disrespectful. I equate it to sex because sex in itself is not sinful and neither is dancing, including twerking. But there are people who misuse sex and pervert dancing that makes it a sin. Twerking is controversial I guess so do you believe that twerking in itself is sin in your opinion? People have been twerking for years but Miley Cyrus brought it to the mainstream's attention. So what are your overall thoughts on dancing especially twerking from a believer's perspective?

I don't consider it dancing. Back in my day, we danced. In think dancing stopped somewhere when hip-hop took over.

I don't see how you can say it isn't dancing. It might not be your sort, but it clearly is 'to move rhythmically, usually to music'.

Do you mean dancing with a partner, face to face? I'd agree that can be better.

How African elders stopped talking to the youths about sex - Opinion - This Is Africa

I learn from and am ever interested in the Arts. Dancing and creative movement rank the highest for me, a simple runner.

More knowledgeable than I, Cosmic Yoruba wrote what I aim to express at the This Is Africa site. African tribes taught sex education through rituals that were held in specific time frames or for certain purposes. What is gained and not fleeting in the least, sexual confidence outranks a stationary desire to be sexy. This is an experience I wish I could have lived.

Toddlers and children inclined to dance are confident individuals.

Merely clapping your hands is "to move rhythmically," but it is not dancing.

Merely tapping your foot is "to move rhythmically," but it is not dancing.

Merely nodding your head is "to move rhythmically," but it is not dancing.

Merely twitching your butt is not dancing.

Pastor's wife twerking at church
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhPULnTDLcg

Two points, btw:

Did you actually watch these videos yourself, or did you just do a YouTube search of twerking videos and merely post them here?

If you did watch the videos yourself, you should have noticed that the first one (the one I included in my quote above) has no twerking in it. It's a beartrap posted by a pastor to lure people who were lasciviously hoping to see a pastor's wife twerking--and he chastises them in the video for seeking Godless titillation.

As for the rest, I'm also wondering why--with all the "white girls twerking" videos that show up on a "twerking" search of YouTube, you deliberately chose only blacks. It had to be a deliberate selection, because if you merely search "twerking," more than half the results on the first page are of white people doing it.

I did watch the videos. I should have taken that first one down. Thanks for the heads up.

As for the race of the people, it was only a coincidence. A lot of the videos that supposedly feature both blacks and whites are bear traps set up by people who seem to want their own special brand of 15 minutes of fame. There was honestly no racism intended. Here are some videos that feature non-black girls (and a white guy) twerking.

I see a white girl twerking in this video. She is quite "good".

Wasn't just one video of twerking enough to get the idea across?

In any case, is there any reason twerking should be considered significantly different than a belly dance, aside perhaps from the learning curve involved?

Actually, I think the learning curve is a very big part of it, as well as the goal of the performer and the ultimate loveliness of the end result.

What makes this:

Twerking is not a dance and can't be compared to belly dancing. Belly dancing is more then just shaking your butt. Its has a history and meaning. Not everyone can do it. Its more then a dance.

Now twerking.... its just a fad. Like planking, pogs, the macarena, afros, beany babies...etc.
