Illinois police release bodycam video of fatal shooting of Black woman in her home
Body-camera footage showing the fatal police shooting of Sonya Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman who had called 911 for help, was released Monday in a case that has led to murder charges against a deputy.

The 36-minute video released via the Illinois State Police includes body-camera footage from each of the two Sangamon County sheriff's deputies who responded to Massey's house after midnight on July 6 after Massey called 911 to report a possible "prowler" at her home in Springfield, according to a court document filed by prosecutors.

What in the...

Grayson had worked at six different law enforcement agencies in Illinois since 2020, according to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

He began working part-time at the Pawnee Police Department in August 2020, then moved to the Kincaid and Virden police departments, before taking up full-time work with the Auburn Police Department then the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and – in May 2023 – Sangamon County.

It is unclear why Grayson changed jobs so frequently and CNN has reached out to the other law enforcement agencies for more information.

I'm sure nobody noticed anything off about this guy...

This sounds scary. We must strive for peace and non violence. I will not watch the video, as it is too violent. Bad apples exist in the police department, and must be weeded out and put in jail, though most police are nice, such as the guy below.

This sort of tragedy occurs too often. In fact, it should never occur. May the Lord our God bless and comfort all those in mourning. In the mighty holy holy holy and precious name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen, amen.

While this is absolutely tragic and this guy deserves the charge imo, I think the idea that it happens often is a misnomer. When one looks at the numbers of calls and contacts officers.have with the public across the nation, it happens very rarely.

We get the idea it happens often in because when it does it garners a lot of attention and even 5 incidents in a year seems like a lot.

I would love it if this never happened. And I do think we could reduce this even further by several things.

More training in de-escalation technique along with use of force training with scenarios to practice.

Lastly, limiting the power of unions to protect officers from disciplinary actions and having their actions kept on record.

Right now, too often an officers actions have to be so egregious there is absolutely no defense for it in order for the officer to be let go. And that's primarily due to the unions protecting them.
