As I am fasting for the Lord to recognize my level of recommitment to him, I wish to akso carry my own oil with which to annoint myself in private and in prayer. I have only found documents online from Catholic sources, which say the bishop or such of that stature have only the right to make such things. I ran away from the Catholic church a long time ago because of such things... I odn't belive it to be true. Any advice?! Must it be olive oil? I have smoe pure frenckinsence, may I add that? Myrrh too?

Thanks.... :groupray:

I would just simply take a store-bought bottle of olive oil...
and when you're in deep prayer pray over it. Or if you know people
who believe in this type of anointing oil have them pray over it in spirit and with knowledge.

That's how my church does it.

With Prayers,
Bri

May I ask why you are wanting to anoint yourself? I do not ask this to criticize, but to give better advice.

Traditionally, anointing oil is used for 3 things:
1. Anointing of the sick.
2. Anointing for service (such as ordination for ministry).
3. Confirmations (Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, Old Catholic)

Most 'scented' oils are made by mixing an essential oil (such as frankincense, myrrh, spikenard, etc) with a base oil (olive oil, almond oil, etc.). If you intend to use olive oil, you need to be aware that olive oil has a definite scent, so you need to get the purest (extra, extra virgin) you can if you plan to add an essential oil to it. Different scents have different traditionally symbolic meanings. You're not REQUIRED to use any particular scents though, it is a matter of personal choice. Personally, I buy chrism that is already scented with frankincense and myrrh, as I like that scent. You can buy already scented oils at most Christian book stores. I like the scent only because it lingers, and is a reminder long after the actual anointing occurs.

If you are not mixing the olive oil, you need to be aware that it will go rancid over time, so add a few drops of lemon juice to it to keep that from happening.

It is true that in all the historic churches, oils are consecrated (by prayer) by the priest or bishop for the specific purpose for which it is to be used. Once consecrated, the oil can be used by either the priest or a lay person to anoint the sick, etc.

I hope this is helpful. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask.

Sometimes when I prepare to fast or go into deep prayer,
I anoint my head and then I pray because I think of it as a way of
telling the Holy Spirit that I'm ready to be used deeply.

No it's not a requirement for one to do... but sometimes it makes me feel closer to god.

There's also something that a friend of mine told me that works...
When you get a headache... drink some anointing oil *olive oil* (don't swallow it)
but bend your head back and wait for a while, then spit that out, then take another
drink and swallow it. She received this from God and trust me... it works if you
believe that God can heal and if you seriously believe in laying of hands *which I do*.

For the old Catholic priest... I didn't mean to offend
:) Just my personal feelings..... I asked about annointing because in Matthew 6:16, Jesus teaches about fasting and spcifically mentions annointing the head yourself when fasting. I'm almost done.... it will be a full 24 day fast with nothing but 100% juices and I feel more alive than ever and full of his grace and love. Fasting when called by Him is much easier than I thought!!!!
:) Praise God!!!!!!!!!

I went with the extra, extra virgin oil, thanks for the tip on the lemon juice. I wondered about the almond oil when I initially wrote.... thanks to the friend with the confirming word on that {less sp[oliage than oilve}

Praise God and Bless you all!!!!!!!!!!!

That's totally interesting.... I'll keep that in mind. ;) And yes, I also believe {and practice} laying of hands. It's amazing the annointings of yesterday that still flow today... they really aren't dead. :) Like I told a curious non-
Christian friend of mnine..... It's like the lottery. you can't win if you don't try {play}

:) big hugs,
SJ :)

Don't worry, no offense was taken at all.

FYI... the comment about 'anointing your head with oil' when fasting is not really talking about anointing the way we usually think-- as in praying for the sick, etc. When the Pharisees were fasting, they were making a big production about it, not taking a bath, not combing their hair, etc. so that everybody KNEW they were fasting. Jesus was saying not to be like that, but rather act/dress normal. Oil was used on the skin/hair as a cosmetic/perfume. It would be the equivalent of saying today "When you fast, go ahead and put gel in your hair and wear cologne like you normally do so people don't know the difference." If you read the passage again, I think you will see that makes perfect sense with the whole passage.

That's not to say it's WRONG to anoint yourself in the way you did. I was asking 'why' just to make recommendations as to what scent you may prefer to use if any. As I said before, different scents have traditionally been used with different 'meanings' behind them.

Thanks for the clarification.... It does make more sense. :) I do feel though, that it afforded me a bit more awareness and protection in my vulnerable state {I was also just re-baptized... fulll immersion this time though....}

I have some pure Frankincense oil and some essence of Myrrh that I added to the oil.... I have always loved the scent of frankincense and know that it and myrrh are some obvious choices in biblical terms. I was reading about the mixture of the myrrh and cinnamon, etc. as well, but really love the scent of Frankincense, so I stuck with those 2 for now. I'd be interested in hearng more on teh meanings, though....

:) God Bless you !!!!!!!

I am currently doing a Sunday school topic titled "Living by the Spirit" and in the second study the topic was symbols of the Holy Spirit. Of course one of the symbols is oil, and the study book had a group discussion about the different oils that were used in anointing oils in the bible and asks how can you apply what each oil symbolized in your life. The following is the teaching page on this:

The following is a list of the items ued in the holy anointing oil of Bible times. How can the Holy Spirit apply these properties to your life?

Myrrh: Used for its rich fragrance, myrrh was the first ingredient in the divine formula. Myrrh comes from a small tree in Arabia whose wood and bark is odoriferous. Its oil could be collected by making an incision in the tree and allowing the sap to flow in to a container. However, myrrh could also be gathered as it oozed out of the bark, similar to the way gum flows out of gum trees. This is called "flowing myrrh," reminding us of the generous and pure giving of the Holy Spirit.

Application in your life:

Cinnamon: A small evergreen tree has deep within its core an inner rind or pulp of laurus cinnamon. Interestingly, this fragrance is mentioned in the Song of Solomon as the lover describes the garden of his betrothed as having cinnamon in it. The sweet cinnamon can be found in our spiritual garden, symbolized by the faithfulness and constancy of the evergreen tree.

Application in your life:

Calamus: In western Asia Minor, canes of Calamus grow. Within the hollows of the cane, fragrantly rich pith is found. Isaiah mentions calamus or "sweet cane" when teaching about sacrifices for sin (Isaiah 43:24). The place where this fragrance resides is in solitude, peacefully alone, sheltered by the outer cane. In our relationship with the Holy spirit, we need a place of solitude to be alone with Him, thinking on God’s Word and praying.

Application in your life:

Cassia: Eight or nine thousand feet above sea level in Cashmere grows Cassia or costus, a purple-flowered plant. Its fragrant oils are exuded primarily from its roots. Jesus once explained that staying saved meant developing deep roots into soil of God. How fitting to speak of the work of the Holy Spirit, our roots into the family of God.

Application in your life:

Olive Oil:
The rich olives of the Mediterranean area are crushed until their meaty flesh becomes oil. This oil serves as the base for the other fragrances to mingle into holy anointing oil. It’s easy to see how Jesus being crucified on the cross became the One who sent the Holy Spirit to the world to be the agent of all God’s blessings.

Application in your life:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you do make an anointing oil for yourself, try to do what this discussion group excercise attempts, which think about what each ingredient of the oil you use is symbolizing and and how you can apply that in your everyday life. It looks like you have a very rich & rewarding devotional in the making.

Your base oil is the primary ingredient...

You just add the fragrant oil til the scent is the strength you like. A word of advice with essential oils is that they can be very strong sometimes, so depending on how concentrated the essential oil you get is a little can go a long way. Most of what you find in places like wal-mart or flea markets are not pure essential oils, however. They are already diluted. You usually have to get them from a specialty shop.

By the time you have gone to all the trouble to buy and mix the oils, it is often easier to just buy some already done for you. Many church supply stores will carry them.

Exodus 30
22Moreover, the Lord said to Moses,
23Take the best spices: of liquid myrrh 500 shekels, of sweet-scented cinnamon half as much, 250 shekels, of fragrant calamus 250 shekels,
24And of cassia 500 shekels, in terms of the sanctuary shekel, and of olive oil a hin.
25And you shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume compounded after the art of the perfumer; it shall be a sacred anointing oil.
26And you shall anoint the Tent of Meeting with it, and the ark of the Testimony,
27And the [showbread] table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense,
28And the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver [for cleansing] and its base.
29You shall sanctify (separate) them, that they may be most holy; whoever and whatever touches them must be holy (set apart to God).
30And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons and sanctify (separate) them, that they may minister to Me as priests.
31And say to the Israelites, This is a holy anointing oil [symbol of the Holy Spirit], sacred to Me alone throughout your generations.(1)
32It shall not be poured upon a layman's body, nor shall you make any other like it in composition; it is holy, and you shall hold it sacred.
33Whoever compounds any like it or puts any of it upon an outsider shall be cut off from his people.

Interesting! But what would those measurements be in modern American or Metric measurements?

I think it's great you are doing this and I hope you get to make it the way you want. Just a quick though: It doesn't have to be any way specific. Annointing something with oil is to primarily show obediance to the Lord. You can even use lotion or somthing else. Just wanted to let you know that real quick.
