Gandhi once contemplated Christianity while in South Africa. He went into a church, sat down and one of the ushers told him he would have to leave because "colored people were not allowed in that particular Anglican cathedral.

Gandhi later said, "That poor usher. He thought he was ushering a colored manout of a cathedral when in reality he was ushering India out of the British empire."

Who wouldn't have been offended? There is often little resemblance between Christ and those who claim to be His followers.

And it's because of people like that, that give Christians a bad name(sadn's me),

which then sends lost people away not wanting much to do with God.

I love this quote so much.

When Ghandhi came to England, to study, he saw the church. The church was in disorder with compromise, bickering, all the things that the called out ones should not have been doing. However, he loved the gospels. He used to preach to his own followers, from the gospel of matthew - particularly the sermon on the mount.

As for his own beliefs, Ghandi basically said that there were many ways to God. He accepted Jesus as one of them.

Did you know that you can be a hindu and still be on fire for jesus?

Well you can!

Simply dont admit that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, there is no way to the father except through him.

ANd that was Ghandi.

I like that saying. I've heard it before, and I think the 1st time I heard it, it really hit as an eye opener.
I think alot of times when we hear something like that we're all pretty quick to point fingers and say "yeah that's what wrong with the church these days". But lately I've been reading a book called "Shine: Make Em Wonder What You've Got" by the Newsboys, and the basic motto of the book is "Be the change you want to see" [I don't mean to start another subj here]. It's common to pass of them blame to someone or somewhere else, but for me to hear a saying like that for one of the world's most respect philosophers really makes me want to step it up and go the extra mile to be more careful about who I am as an everyday representitive of Christ.

I am quite familiar with that Gandhi quote and it rang true then and still rings true today, and as someone has already said quite truthfully, it is very apt for this message board in particular areas.


And, For Jim B; I am glad you posted it here, as I think you have managed to get some honest and objective replies, instead of a knock-down-drag-out-fight which would have been sure to occur elsewhere. What a refreshing change. And besides it is not taking up too much room.

I think far to many people fall in love with thier "Church" and forsake Christ.

You can probably say that about any religion, including Gandhi's.
What defines a Christian is his honest & truthful attempt to be like Christ ALL THE TIME. None of us succeed.
I also think Christians have let secular society define what a Christian should be, more than we have look to the Bible to tell us what a Christian should be. By either standard, we fail to measure up...that where Gods' forgiveness & grace come in.
I believe thet biggest problem with Christians today is that they fail to realize that being a Christians isn't a part-time thing.

yeah the christian label sucks. i would almost like to be known as an aetheist. they get far much more respect than christians do nowadays. i am a follower of christ not a christian. unfortunatly that is what it has come to for most of us believers. we can't be lumped into the same category as most christians. shame it has come to this.

It's true... Christians are made up of imperfect humans, just like me. ...And I might go so far as to say just like everyone else around here. But I think the sadest thing is when we try separate ourselves from "the bad Christian", cuz obiviously that's not us! But truth is we're all in this together.
Since this in the music section.. It's like DC Talk's "What If Stumble?" were they say "What if stumble? What if fall? What if I lose my step and make fools of us all? Will the love continue when the walk becomes the crawl?"

When Ghandi said "I like your Christ, but I don't like your Christians" it's possible that he was searching for perfection on earth and was disappointed to find that even though Christ, Himself, was & is perfect, we [his followers] aren't perfect. Ghandi himself spent his life trying to search & find something to fill that empy hole in his life, but he was trying to do it on his own. All of us who have come to Christ know that's impossible.

We live everyday covered in God's grace, and that's the only way imperfect humans like us can even manage to carry the name of Christ in our title as Christians.

So I know Christians have bad record in alot of ways/areas, but I don't think that means we should not associate with the title of being a Christian ..that would be giving up. Instead, let us be challenged to work all harder, and sink even deeper in God's grace so that we can prove to each other & the world that Christ really does live in us & shines through us.

If it only takes one or 2 to get a rep for something, then maybe me and a couple other pure-hearted Christians [like u] can make the difference in how ppl see Christians. ...or at least make the difference to those around us.

I don't know if I agree with this as I seemed to relate to that statement very well. (I'm not stating that Ghandi and I were thinking the same thing ). Before I became a Christian, I would ask questions of some people I knew who stated they were Christians, etc., and had a basic idea of what a Christian was suppose to do/be. However, many of the answers I received were a total opposite of the way these people were. Very hypocritical and this cliche always rang in my head, do as I say, not as I do. I'm not saying that everyone is perfect or many people even close, but it appeared that no one made the effort to do as the preached.

Even though it shouldn't, you meet a couple of people like this and a stereotype starts forming. It's like going to the store and receiving bad service. You tell EVERYONE of the bad service, but if it's good, you hardly mention it all.

there is no way u can love God and serve him and not like ur brother and sister..... if a person is not like God, hey...guess what, no one is.....but we can try andif that person is not trying hard enough thats not exactly the place where she/he wants to be at

There are a number of differing christian views on hell. Do you really believe that "for Jesus" Ghandi is burning eternally?
If you really believe this, how can you make a joke out of it?
If there are 20 evil people in New Zealand, and we gather all of those people and put them all in one place (say Blenheim), have we increased the amount of righteousness in the country? Then let us add suffering and pain to those 20 people, have we increased or decreased the amount of evil and suffering in the country? If our goal was perfection, and restoring all things to completness, wouldn't that be a tragic defeat of everything we were accomplishing?
Actually I don't mind how people feel about this, it is the making a joke of eternity that makes me weep.
