What can, happen, and often does, when considering scripture, is that we often forget that everything has context. That's certainly not what Paul thought. He didn't think of himself as no longer sinning:
“18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but [how] to perform what is good I do not find. 19 For the good that I will [to do], I do not do; but the evil I will not [to do], that I practice.” (Ro 7:18-19 NKJV)
Another apostle, John, wrote to Christians:
“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” (1Jo 1:8 NKJV)
So, for example, someone may read 1 John 3:9 and think, 'Well there's a scripture that says one does not since, once born anew!".
We can't blame a person entirely for this, since many translations have botched the manuscripts from which they translated from.
The KJV for example, renders that text... Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
However, if we read from the Greek manuscript, we get a more accurate rendering of the text.
To practice sin, is quite different to sin, because as sinners, we sin all the time, in thought, word, and deed, and none of us can say we do not sin, because all fall short of the glory of God. We are indeed imperfect. Romans 3:23
However, to practice sin, means to actually continue doing what we know is wrong. Romans 6:12 Which is different to the thing we are sometimes unaware of that surfaces in our mind - like a wrong though that pop up out of our heart. James 3:2
We don't put the thought into practice, but we have just sinned, even though unintentionally.
We have to be constantly asking God's forgiveness. Matthew 6:12
It's important too that we consider the context at all times, so that we are sure we get the right perspective.
We know that the scriptures say all men sin, so a scripture will not contradict those and say that we do not sin.
Something would have to be very wrong there.
Yes we can, David. If we are tempted to think we can be sinless in this life, we just have to think of the words of Jesus:
“‘And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This [is] the first commandment.” (Mr 12:30 NKJV)
Would any of us dare to claim that we love God perfectly like that, with all our heart, all our soul and all our strength?
Perfectly in a relative sense, of course.
Jesus commanded it be done, so it can be done...
- with all your heart - that means all your heart (complete).
2 Kings 20:3
“Now, O LORD, please remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and have done what is good in your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
“Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what was good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
I beseech thee, O LORD, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.
- with all your soul - that means your whole being. You are completely devoted. Not half way in and half way out. Not double hearted, as above.
- with all your mind - we are again complete in our mind - our thoughts, and intentions, which relates to our decisions in life.
Have we decided to serve God, or are we undecided - our mind is not made up? Acts 17:11
Are we in mind zealous for God? Then it is a complete mind. Romans 7:23
Is your mind a slave to God's law? Then it is with all your mind that you love God. Romans 8:6, 7
Is your mind set on the spirit, rather than the flesh? Then your mind is complete toward God... We get the idea.
- with all your strength - We put our all into it.
We give of our strength and energy, in serving god - doing God's will. like David did in song. 2 Samuel 6:14
Or anything else we are doing. Colossians 3:23; Romans 12:11
We don't want to be like Jehoash - half-hearted in our zeal for God. 2 Kings 13:14-19
