Find a daily lectionary. Seriously. I'm sure it isn't just me- but when I read the bible- I tend to burn out quickly if I attempt to take on too much at a time. It has- admittedly- been a few years since I've read the entire bible- but where I can read other books and holy books straight through with no issues- the bible has never been one of them.

15 chapters a day? that is pretty hardcore brother.
I have been on a steady 5 chapters a day. any more would be excessive for me, but that is just me. if you have the capacity for 15 than do it ^_^

Remember though it's not a race, you are supposed to meditate on, and remember the things you learn in the bible, not just storm through it as fast as you can.

That is solid advice, I'd just add that it might be useful to get a hold of a commentary or two and add some scholarly insight to the raw reading. Merely reading it does no good if you aren't understanding and internalizing the material. It isn't like some magic rock you can rub so many times to get a result. . . ya gotta get the comprehension, context, etc. I totally support reading a whole book if you get on a roll . . . but then go back through, slow it down, read it with commentaries.

See what works. Don't put yourself under law to read 15 chapters a day. But don't limit yourself if you want to read more.

I would start with 3 one in the morning, one in the afternoon and one at night and adjust from there. At first you may want to read a lot and later you may want to slow down.

Some of the great men of God I knew read the Bible a bunch through out the day. If you have a desire to read a lot by all means read, read, read.

I would advise starting out a little smaller lest you get burnt out and give up altogether. Sometimes we need to do a little bit, test it out, and then see if we can increase it a little. No one can ever run a marathon when they first start running.

Open the bible each day when you get home after praying for God to reveal His truth to you and read until something hits you in the chest, then pray about that thing. You will get so much more out of the word this way.

If you really want to read a lot, I recommend reading some of the books that are stories, like Esther, Job, Kings, Samuel (various stories several chapters long in each)

15 chapters is a bit, uh, much.

Welcome!

I found that it always works out best when I let the Holy Spirit lead my day to day Bible reading. So give yourself ample time when you do begin to read so that you can truly be led by the Spirit. I say this because I think of reading the Bible as eating spiritual food, somewhat like eating natural food. You don't want to rush a meal or fall short of all of the nutrition or calories you may need at that mealtime. You will find that some days you feel like reading a little longer than others. But be careful that you are not cutting you spiritual feeding time short just because you did not give yourself ample time to begin with. Other natural restraints like having to read only up until 7:30am so that you can be on time for work may come into play as well, for example. But in general, the Holy spirit will let you know when you are spiritually "satisfied" during any given reading session, just like your body lets you know when you are full when eating a meal. This is why we ask God to "give us this day our daily (spiritual) bread" (Matthew 6:11; Luke 11:3). He knows exactly how much spiritual food we need to sustain us throughout the day.

How many chapters a day?

I like to, excuse the phrase but poke at the bible a little.

If I didn't like something in the bible or it gave me issue or pause for thought... I spend time investigating just that one verse or chapter. Pull it apart, turn in upside down and shake it to see if it could be trusted. The bible will stand advanced scrutiny if you investigate it enough so don't be afraid to question it.
But I advise be patient, sometimes the answer to something you need won't come for months or even years later.

Sometimes you have to live through certain events so your mind is capable of understanding certain passages.

I think the bibles meant to give us problems so we spend time, thinking about God and meditating on his word.

I like studies that group verses together. I just done a sermon on the biblical version of angels. Not all that new age nonsense.

William lane Craig does an excellent series using this grouping thing.

Doctrines of God, doctrines of Christ, Angels, man, etc. It helpful remembering verses in this context.

Straight reading is great too, I've read the bible cover to cover a few times but I find it helpful to study verses in some practical context, like maybe helping someone in this forum.

Find a question, try to find biblical passages that provide the answer. The Word isn't flat, it's alive it's more like a house with rooms and floors(stories). You have to live in The Word. It's hard and I'm a disaster at it at times, but that's where it at.

Im wondering how much of the bible i should read im thinking 5 chapters...5 in the morning a other 5 in the afternoon and 5 at night

Does not matter.

What you can meditate on is what you should read. If you can only absorb 5 verses, then do so rather than 5 chapters that will quickly fall off immediately you finish.

Ask The Holy Spirit to help before you read

I just think its important that you know that you dont have to restrict or set things too rigid with the things of God, just go with the flow. Its much better that way...and it allows the Holy Spirit do what He will:)

I agree, as it seems others do too. We have a tendency to want to please God, and avoid being told we are doing things wrong. But God did not specify an amount, so there is not a wrong number. And God's plan for us is not robotic obedience, but pursuit of knowing Him more.

We learn out of appreciation for Him, and our love grows as we learn about Him.

God asked us to meditate on His Word day and night. Some people don't even have access to Bibles, but they can continue to mull over what they know. Bring it back to mind when you can... chew the cud.

When I use audio Bibles, I will listen to a lot of chapters at once, hearing the flow of events and concepts. When I read, I tend to focus on details in a very short passage, and sometimes look up related verses or word definitions.

Sometimes I stop when I hear the Spirit say stop. Usually that is because the last thought is the important one that I need to focus on. Not everyone has these types of inner leads and nudges, but for me they are more important for obedience than sticking to a perfect schedule.

Ask God to guide you.

I believed in quality but not quantity. Reading the bible, IMO is tricky. Sometimes you must read between the lines because it is filled with parables and hyperbole. I depend much on the commentary in the larger version of my NIV.

Remembered back in Bible Study class that there could be pages of paper for me to take home to study over a mere half chapter. There are so many hidden treasures in God's words that reading it as a book would be futile. It would be smart to study it in a group and meditate the verses alone when you have time.

So true.
One of my favorite ways to study, is to take a question on CF and research it -- the surrounding verses, the word meanings.... and then suddenly I find I've been reading the Bible for half an hour! And I've learned something new.

There is a lot of content in there and there is always something to be learned, but I don't think it needs to be made that difficult. I read the chapters (10 per day) as if i'm reading a book - but also making sure I am paying attention. The key is praying first for discernment, enlightenment and guidance from the Holy Spirit. That is essential in learning from the Bible. I also read Proverbs and Acts about once a month.

Not everyone needs to read 10 chapters a day, of course, but I want to read tons of Bible and chopping it up the way I do (the Prof. Grant Horner system), I get a good diet of scripture which I was never getting before. It all depends on the desire and personality of the reader, I would say.

if you are reading in faith that your will hear from God, there will be times when a single verse has such a profound impact on you that further reading at that time would be unfruitful - meditating on what you have read is more important than reading a set amount and getting nothing out of what you read, or going past something that God wants you to meditate on.
