Hey all,

I was looking at some books in a bookstore and I came across some from the Holy Transfiguration Monastery in Boston. I did some looking and it seems that they belong to the Holy Orthodox Church of North America (HOCNA). I haven't heard of this jurisdiction. Are they in communion or not. And if not, what does that mean for their publications...still worth buying or not?

Peace.

They aren't canonical anymore. They used to be part of ROCOR, but they had a huge sex scandal, and the ROCOR kicked them out. Now they are under the HOCNA.

Their books are ok. I have problems with their Menaion. It was reworded to as to fit with Byzantine chant, so it's hard to use for Russian chant. and the translations are sometimes strange. In one of the stichera for Moses they call him "tardeloquent".

I thought I was the only one who noticed "tardeloquent" :D

Their books rule. They are the best. If you're using Byzantine Chant, they're absolutely perfect. I have their Great Horologion and Pentecostarion and our Church has their Menaion. All of them are wonderful.

They are, without a doubt, among the wackier of the schismatics. But I have nothing but absolute praise for their Liturgical books.

As for their non-Liturgical books- I've never read one so I don't know.

I checked my American Heritage Dictionary and Google:

No standard web pages containing all your search terms were found.

Your search - tardeloquent - did not match any documents.

Does that term mean delayed in speech? Moses did have Aaron speak for him.

That should be "tardiloquent". Hope that helps.

Some people don't like buying their stuff, most are fine with it on the grounds that they're the only ones producing some of these texts and it's not so bad to support them like this.

Thanks for the correction, it's still a goofy word to use either way.

My view is that if I don't have problems buying stuff from Protestants and Catholics (who we believe to be in heresy), why should I have a problem buying from schismatics, who actually were Orthodox at one time.

I was looking at possibly getting their psalter since it is from the Septuagint. I can't seem to find one anywhere else.

The psalms in the OSB are still NKJV with notes about the LXX rather than being taken from the LXX.

Peace.
You should get their Psalter immediately. It rules.

You might also try the Kathisma Psalter with the Nine Canticles Revised According to the Septuagint prepared by Holy Myrrhbearers Monastery, Otsego, NY, 13825-2265 (www.holymyrrhbearers.com). Some people prefer the New Skete Monastery (also OCA) version it's also a very nice work, but I think I prefer the Holy Myrrhbearers version for practical puposes. The New Skete one is hardcover and does not "flip open" as easily as does the Holy Myrrhbearers version. You can sample the New Skete work here: http://ogreatmystery.com/newskete/

I will second that. I have the great Horologion and their small prayer book also.

I was talking with some people in our parish bookstore and the question came up, why do the schismatics have the best stuff?

Anyway, they are no longer under HOCNA, they are an island unto themselves.

There no longer HOCNA? If im not mistaken they are HOCNA ,they invented it.

But anyways, I have their "Ladder of Divine Ascent" . There the only ones that make an attractive cloth bound harcover with a color icon of the Ladder on the inside. Only other version of this book is a softcover by penguin books.

A: Everybody else is too busy with the panheresy of ecumenism or selling out the Church to the communists to make quality books.

As for HTM, they're still HOCNA. But their publications, for some reason, tend to downplay their connection to anything at all.

I have that one, bought it at St Tikhon's bookstore.

One idea is to buy it from a non-scismatic outlet if that bothers you. At least some of them can be found elsewhere and then you'll be supporting the non-scismatics too.
