strictly speaking:
Adi - ornament/adornment (i.e. crown piece or pendant)
El - (of) G-d

bat - daughter (of)

Kelev - AKA Caleb - meaning dog or goy

As with my screen name of Henaynei, it is kinda a prayer......

May my service to His people, my obedience, faith and faithfulness be such an adornment (bring such honor to His Name) to G-d that I merit a portion of Kelev's blessing - to enter the Land as a citizen and Jew - WHILE recognizing that today I am not Jewish but only a goy, a mere dog under His table............ may I be worthy to be called a TRUE daughter of Kelev/Caleb

It gave me two. . . Hagar and Sarida. I'm not sure I like Hagar 'cause she was bond woman and slave I know the name Barbara literally means stranger or foreigner. . .never liked that meaning.

actually most Hebrew given names carry little to no realtionship to the civil given name - Hubby is Arthur, Hebrew Yitzkakh Yisrael ben Melekh. Most Hebrew names are like that

Ok, taking one of my famous synthetic educated guesses here:

I would hazard an opinion that it was likely because the Hebrew name is their "real" name - the one with meaning both in defination and in connection to the reality of who they are as a people. The civil name is essentially a pseudonym - something they (the Jewish people) had to adopt to survive in a foreign culture. Over time and as distance increased from their roots, the pseudonyms also took on tradition, naming after this or that relaitive - but never with the weight of the Hebrew name. In situations where the Hebrew name lost it's weightiness (to the givers of the names, i.e. parents) eventually no hebrew name was given at all. Therefore you will find today Jewish people with only pseudonyms. Indication of advanced stages of the cancer of assimilation.
