Trump administration pushing to block new money for testing, tracing and CDC in upcoming coronavirus relief bill

The Trump administration is trying to block billions of dollars for states to conduct testing and contact tracing in the upcoming coronavirus relief bill, people involved in the talks said Saturday.

The administration is also trying to block billions of dollars that GOP senators want to allocate for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and billions more for the Pentagon and State Department to address the pandemic at home and abroad, the people said.

The administration’s posture has angered some GOP senators, the officials said, and some lawmakers are trying to push back and ensure that the money stays in the bill.

The negotiations center around a bill Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is preparing to unveil this coming week as part of negotiations with Democrats on what will likely be the last major coronavirus relief bill before the November election.

Trump and other White House officials have been pushing for states to own more of the responsibility for testing and have objected to creating national standards, at times seeking to minimize the federal government’s role.

“Cases and deaths are now both rising again, including in many red states,” said Sam Hammond, a policy expert at the right-leaning think tank the Niskanen Center, which has been working with Senate Republicans on testing legislation. “Senate Republicans have asked for funding to help states purchase test kits in bulk. As it currently stands, the main bottleneck to a big ramp-up in testing is less technical than the White House’s own intransigence.”

President Trump has repeatedly questioned the value of conducting widespread coronavirus testing, arguing that if there were fewer tests conducted, the number of infections would be lower

To the Trump faithful I say: How dare these supposedly Republican senators go against the will of Trump? Why does McConnell want to work with the Democrats in the House? Trump wants the pandemic numbers to come down as much as anybody, and the best way to do that is by not testing. Remember in November: withhold your votes from GOP senators to show your displeasure.

Tracing has already been politicized. NY wouldn't let them ask people if they had been to a protest. What's the point if it's only for an agenda?

Tracing has already been politicized. NY wouldn't...

Well, if the states won't do it properly, maybe the federal government should step in, like with the 'border patrol policemen' in Oregon.

I have little faith in a bloated federal government making things better. They can't work together at all.

....I think you know very well that contact tracing has to be done for effective virus tracking. Or do you?

.....if the US were ever invaded, let's cut the defense budget and leave it to the states to defend their territory.

People are asked who they might have been in contact with, closer than 6 feet for more than 10 minutes. If that happened at a protest, they'll get that information. Not asking specifically about protests doesn't seem political. There are lots of places they could be in contact with others. Unless you give a list of every possible place, asking just about protests actually sounds like an agenda.

This story seems to be the source of these comments: NYC COVID-19 Contact Tracers Not Asking About George Floyd Protest Participation, Despite Fears of New Virus Wave. This has a more editorial slant, and suggests reasons why asking might cause concerns: NYC's contact tracers have been told not to ask people if they've attended a protest

I don't know how much truth is in the article, just repeating what I heard.

I tend to not repeat things if I am unsure if they are true.

What would be the point in asking if they had been to a protest? You can't contact trace with such a mass amount of people making contact with people they don't even know who they are.

One of the things you'd like to get out of contact tracing is an understanding of how Covid is spreading. However I don't think it's a good idea to ask specifically out one politically-charged thing only.

Mnuchin, Meadows head to Capitol Hill after Trump’s coronavirus budget plan is met with frosty reception

Top White House officials will head to Capitol Hill on Tuesday for a full day of meetings after some of President Trump’s priorities in the next coronavirus spending package were met with bipartisan resistance, prompting one GOP senator to call President Trump’s pitch a “first draft.”

Mnuchin and Meadows plan to meet with Senate GOP appropriators in the late morning to discuss Republican concerns about a White House push to cut new funding for testing, tracing, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. White House officials have also expressed opposition to extending more aid to states and cities, an issue that has split Republicans.

Once again, the Trump plan is 'you're on your own'.

Once again, the Trump plan is 'you're on your own'.

Comrades! Presidential Trump using tried and truthful strategy. Roll Your Ownski (RYO) is American way to fix things. Duck tape, crazy glue and Windex fixes any health problem. No need for expensive hospitality and doctors. Look at Presidential Trump. He is fit as bass fiddle and made a great score on test with elephant pictures. RYO-Care will put lights out on terrible Obamacare. Comrades will love it. Loyal citizens are all talking about it. Presidential Trump gets phone calls and twits from rich, successful, smart advisors telling him what greatness is this plan. Advisor Jared too busy making peace in Middle East to become Minister of Healthy Things. Ivanka will take over project.

Best part is Telehealth. Got broken leg? Login to dontdietoday.gov to get free app (Ask Ivanka) and get YouTube video on fixing broken leg at home. She looks hot in scrubs, BTW.

Other RYO-Care videos are Madea's Gunshot Wound Care, Kanye West's Self Psychiatric Care, and this Comrade's personal favorite, Dumping Uncle Joe.

Two weeks from Wednesday, look for big announcement.
