A priest of the Diocese of Münster, Germany, Father Hermann Backhaus, said that consuming pornography “can have a relieving effect” on celibate people. He also considers it a “very strong” statement to associate the devil with pornography, as Pope Francis did at a meeting with seminarians in Rome last month.

Backhaus has been a priest since 2001. He works as a psychologist in an accompaniment center for people in the service of the Catholic Church. At the center he offers support with the aim of “growing in interior freedom” and “recognizing and living the vocation given by God.”

This work, as explained on his website, is offered to full-time pastoral workers, religious, and people preparing for those ministries.

In an interview with Katolisch.de, the news outlet of the Catholic Church in Germany, Backhaus warned against “the somewhat dirty connotation” attributed to the term pornographic.

Pornography can hook you just as fast, and just as hard, as cocaine or heroin, and is just as psychologically damaging, in the long run.

Besides, who cares what any Catholic clergyman from Germany has to say about anything?

This is so incredibly sad. Nobody in the Catholic Church should be promoting pornography for any reason. Pornography is evil and a lot of sex trafficking is because of pornography.

Someone once told me that when you view pornography, you're either viewing someone committing adultery or someone fornicating. To say that it's a good idea to do this grave sin could only be from the devil.

And they say the Rhine flows into the Tiber. Is it going to be acceptable now for priests to use porn to pass the time?

It's not all wrong, if you remove the religious aspect from it porn can serve as a relief from built up sexual frustration. Same as how drugs are use to relief certain conditions. And like drug there is a chance you will develop an unhealthy dependency on it.

The question now lies on God's teachings regarding the act of watching porn. My personal understanding is that God don't endorse such method of relief. But then again I'm hardly a qualified theologian.

On a side tangent, I don't really put too much credence to anything Pope Francis says nowadays. He takes hard stances on minute things but soft stances on important things. In this instance porn is the devil but the Vatican working with authoritarian regimes like CCP as difference in culture. Really?

Thinks everyone unintelligent does he? (Read in Yoda's voice).

Even if you remove the religious aspect it's wrong. Research all the secular studies on the topic. For example, here's one:

"Research has shown that pornography use is correlated physical changes in the brain. The visual stimulus of pornography hijacks the brain’s reward system and overwhelms it with unnatural prolonged dopamine levels. The result is the brain physically deteriorating in shape, size, and chemical balance.

While seemingly impersonal and scientific, these effects on the brain impact us on a personal level. Like Phineas Gage, the changes in our brain from pornography correspond with changes in our mood, personality, and the way we treat others.

Pornography can often lead to depression or feelings of isolation. It can cause us to view ourselves in a negative light, like we aren’t worthy of love. Perhaps worst of all, it can cost us friendships and relationships.

'When we damage our brain, it changes us.' The impact of pornography isn’t some abstract occurrence over in 'Brainland.' It’s a serious issue that affects us on a deep, personal level in our day-to-day life."
"

If you'll take a look you'll find an abundant amount of evidence of the dangers of pornography that have nothing to do with religious reasons.
