Woo, finally got to making this devotional. :) Galatians 5:22-23 are one of my favorite Bible verses. Sometimes, it can be hard to use the Fruits of the Spirit, but I pray about gaining more patience and self-control.

Date
August 9, 2024 | Fruit of The Spirit
Verse
Proverbs 11:30 (NIV): "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and the one who is wise saves lives."

John 15:5-8 (NIV): "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

Matthew 17:20b (NIV): "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’"

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV): "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
Explanation
These four passages from the Bible provide guidance on living a life that is righteous according to Christian teachings. Let's break down each passage and its significance:
  1. Proverbs 11:30 talks about the fruit of the righteous being a "tree of life." In this context, a tree of life symbolizes eternal life or prosperity. As Christians, we can aim to lead lives that produce good works, which are likened to the fruits on this tree.
  2. John 15:5-8 emphasizes our connection with Jesus as the vine and ourselves as branches. The passage suggests that if we remain connected to Christ (through prayer, faith, and obedience), we will bear much fruit—good works or deeds. This is a reminder of our dependence on God for spiritual growth and guidance in leading a righteous life.
  3. Matthew 17:20b speaks about the power of faith, even as small as a mustard seed. It implies that with strong faith, we can overcome obstacles and perform miraculous deeds, aligning ourselves more closely to God's will for our lives. In this sense, faith is essential in living righteously and producing good fruit.
  4. Galatians 5:22-23 lists the "fruit of the Spirit," which are characteristics that should be evident in a Christian's life, such as love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. By cultivating these virtues within ourselves, we can uphold positive moral character and embody Christlike qualities in the modern world.
Societal Relevance
To gain or have the fruit of the Holy Spirit within us, Christians should strive to:
  1. Maintain a strong connection with God through prayer, study of Scripture, and obedience to His teachings;
  2. Cultivate virtues such as love, joy, peace, etc., by practicing them in daily life;
  3. Develop faith that enables us to overcome challenges and align our actions with God's will for our lives.
  4. Live a life characterized by kindness, goodness, and righteousness, thereby upholding Christian values in the modern world.
Patience can be one of the most difficult Fruits of the Spirit to attain. For myself, sometimes, I can be quick to judge others. For instance, during the 2024 Olympics, there was an opening ceremony scene that was in the news which was a fusion between the Greek god Dionysus and the Last Supper painting of Leonardo da Vinci where scantily clad performers dressed in drag. In my opinion, that was disgusting, and a total disgrace to the Olympics. Even if something is wrong, does not mean that I should judge others. Instead, prayer could help, as we must love the sinner.

Another thing that can be a struggle is self-control. Sometimes, with my ADHD, I can make impulsive decisions that can get me into trouble. I have broken my parents riding mower as a teen in 2014 due to my impulsivity (damaging the mower’s transmission), and had to mow the lawn using a push mower for two years afterwards. This is the reason why I do not drive. However, God has helped me get over my impulsivity, and luckily, there are medications that can reduce impulsivity, which I have taken since the 2000s, though, if I forget to take them, my executive functioning skills go down.

Thankfully, some other Fruits of the Spirit are in me. For instance, I always say please and thank you, and hold the door open for others (kindness and love). Also, my sense of humor (joy) has cheered people up before, even though my parents get annoyed if too many puns are made. Finally, my faith in God is unwavering, even though our world can seem to be a dark place. Overall, I need to practice using the Fruits of the Spirit more. Sinners will never be perfect, but daily practice can make us better Christians.

Hello,

I want to sincerely thank you for the devotional on patience and self-control. It has made me think a lot. Your perspective and the teachings you shared really resonated with me. Thank you!

I think that in Galatians 5:22-23, self-control is presented as a manifestation of life in the Spirit, helping us manage our emotions and desires in ways that reflect God's love.

In Romans 12:12, we are encouraged to be "joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." This reminds us that patience is not just passive waiting, but an active attitude of trust in God.

The Church Fathers also emphasized these virtues. Saint Augustine, for example, spoke of the importance of moderation and self-control as paths to true freedom. He said that "patience is the mother of all virtues", which underlines its fundamental role in the Christian life.

In summary, I believe that both patience and self-control are essential to living a full Christian life, helping us to face difficulties with serenity and to act with love and wisdom in our decisions.

Thank you again and may God bless you.

You are welcome, brother. Thanks for the compliments. This is straight out of the Bible. :) Yes, the life anecdote (societal relevance) section of my devotional tries to connect my life experiences to the verses. Self-control has gotten better for me, the more I dive into God's Word. In fact, this might be a little much, but my lustful thoughts go away whenever I focus more on God, especially over the last few months.

Romans 12:12 is a good verse, part of Romans 12, which is a good chapter. Made a devotional (Romans 12:2, about 10 verses before Romans 12:12) on the first section of Romans as well, about 1.5 months ago. Patience = Trust, so that is why I always pray to increase my patience. St. Augustine is one of my favorite saints, as he has some good literature written up about the Bible. I have not read any of his stuff, but have seen a few quotes from him, so I have downloaded The Confessions of Saint Augustine from 400 AD into my computer for the artificial intelligence to use as a theological resource.

Finally, Jesus has shown His patience, by turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:38-48), so that is why I want to live up to that goal of being less judgemental. Once again, I thank you for the compliments.

Romans 12:2 Devotional - Breaking the Mold:
I am pleased to read your experience and how the Word of God has impacted your life. It is inspiring to see how self-control and patience have been strengthened in you through prayer and meditation on the Scriptures.

Romans 12 is a powerful chapter, and I like how you connect your experiences with the verses, it shows the transformative power of faith.

How cool that you are exploring the works of Saint Augustine. His perspective on grace and redemption is so profound and relevant. I am sure that "The Confessions" will offer new light on your spiritual path.

And you are absolutely right, Jesus is our perfect model of patience and love. It is a challenge, but also a beautiful goal to aspire to.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. God bless you.

You are welcome, brother. I use a bit of artificial intelligence (AI) to explore theological resources, but my life experiences can never be explained with AI. Are you Catholic as well? I became Catholic from nondenominational in 2022. Applying Galatians 5:22-23 and Jesus to my life can be really difficult, but with time, the Holy Spirit of God will help me through this.

One could say, that I am bananas for Jesus, cos God is berry good. But yes, we can apple-y these verses to our daily lives. :)

Hello brother. I was raised in the Catholic faith, although I distanced myself from it during my youth. However, over time, I have felt the call to return to my spiritual home. I understand what you are saying about the difficulty of applying Galatians 5:22-23 in daily life; It requires effort and a lot of grace. But like you, I trust that the Holy Spirit guides us and strengthens us every day to live according to God's will.

Welcome back to the Catholic faith. Being a Christian active in his faith takes effort, but we will reap the reward in Heaven, by living with Jesus eternally.
