Somebody explain this to me please. I went to EWTN today and watched what I guess was part of a Mass (maybe) and then all of a sudden there was this girl on a hilltop saying hail marys and after about the 500th time other people started walking up beside her saying it and my daughter walks in the room and starts giggling and saying they sound like ghosts and why are they doing that....etc. It just went on and on and on....and I'm like "Make it stop!" and I guess my cry was heard because pretty quick they went on to something else but seriously they must have said it at least a couple hundred times...it was strange....like chanting. Can someone tell me what that was and what was up with all that?

I don't know much about EWTN, but if they do the whole Rosary (all 4 sets of mysteries, 20 decades), it could have been 203 times. Normally, though, people only pray one set of mysteries at a time, or 53 Hail Mary's (and some other prayers, like the Our Father).

Nice link, bigsierra! Best diagram of how-to-pray-the-Rosary I've seen yet!

Hi twosid

They were praying the Rosary . . not just saying Hail Marys . . . the Rosary is a contemplative prayer, and each decade of the Rosary an Our Father and 10 Hail Marys are said while meditating on some aspect of Jesus' life . . . When you are not used to hearing it and know little or nothing about it, it can be hard to understand its purpose. . .

Peace in Him!

LOL, no it wasn’t part of the Mass??? Why would you think that?

Anyway, the girl on the hill was praying the rosary and what is neat about that particular broadcast is how it shows everyone all over the world praying together when we pray the rosary, our prayers are untied as one with those who are also praying, what a awesome thing.

The rosary consist of the apostles creed. A our father, and three hail Mary’s for increased faith, hope and Love. The theological virtues that are pure gifts from God.

Then we recite the first mystery which will either be from the joyful, sorrowful, or glorious mysteries from the bible and we mediate on scripture while we say 10 hail Mary’s then we end that mystery with a “glory be”, (to the father son and HS). Then we repeat this for each mystery we pray.

Since this obviously is foreign to you, I will over look how you made fun out of what you did not understand.

No, it is just the rosary that is broadcasted at 2 :30 central time on EWTN. This one that is mentioned is very old, I think it was made in the 80’s and EWTN still plays it. It is like Mother Angelica’s rosary tht was taped with her sisters or the one Mitch Pacawa has from the Holy Land. It is just the rosary being prayed for us to pray with it, and nothing more. It isn’t a big mystery of something unusual.

As I said, I really like that one in particular because the imagery they use is how our prayers are joined with the prayers of the blessed Mother along with everyone’s prayer being said through out the world.

I recommend that Protestants start out praying the rosary with The Divine Chaplet. It's a lot easier to understand theologically. It follows the same pattern.

An audio version can be found here:
http://www.ewtn.com/vondemand/audio/seriessearchprog.asp?seriesID=502&T1=chaplet

I bet this is the one you heard:
http://www.ewtn.com/vondemand/audio/seriessearchprog.asp?seriesID=501&T1=rosary
Wouldn't that mean that said Protestant believes in praying the rosary?.....

Unless the theology is explained through specific New Testament biblical teaching (not the catechism, not Old Testament law), then most Protestants would probably not be convinced in the theology behind it.

I caught the beginning of the Divine Chaplet today, it caught my eye because I'd never heard the word "chaplet" before. I only got to watch the intro, but I was interested in the fresco of the Trinity. Depictions of the Trinity fascinate me. I mean, I understand the justification behind it, but seeing a depiction of God like that always kind of frightens me. I'm the same way around the icon of the Trinity in my church.

Since it was brought up here, if you say the rosary for all the mysteries do you just continue back around through all the decades or do you complete the Rosary for each mystery and start all over again? I hadn't heard of doing the Rosary for all the mysteries before. Does it have a special significance?
