This paragraph is entirely false:

Democracy is not an end in itself but a means to an end. In Western countries, the end we seek is most famously stated as “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” a phrase in the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Other Western societies seek similar ends — the French tout liberté, égalité, fraternité, Australians life, liberty, and prosperity, Canadians life, liberty, and security of the person. Our Western system of democracy is merely the most effective system of governance devised to date to allow us to achieve our ends.

Democracy is a form of tyranny. The US was established as a Republic, not a democracy; the founding fathers recognized democracy as a threat to liberty and sought to limit its effects.

While pure democracy is 'mob rule' our representative republic is the same at the end of the day. Consider that in the beginning of the political process the people at large may be represented by many candidates. But as the process continues only one is elected, therefore denying the majority of the representation they desired in the first place. Ten or more candidates routinely seek the presidency, representing ten or more constituencies. But by November 2 all the rest have been swept away leaving only one to represent all ten or more groups or interests. Therefore, what we have is really 'democracy', not representative government. If my candidate, representing my views, is not elected, I have no representation, but must accept a one-size-fits-all office holder.

Lawrence Solomon: Hold off democracy | FP Comment | Financial Post

Yeah, I'm a little baffled as to why people are applauding what's going on in Egypt.

Mubarek was an evil man, no doubt, and we should never have gotten into bed with him, but what's coming is going to be another nightmarish Islamofacist state.

Democracy is not necessarily a good thing. Our Founders understood that and that's why they wanted a Constitutional Republic and not a Democracy.

As Ben Franklin so famously said, "Democracy is nothing more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to eat for supper".

Whatever government the Egyptians come up with, two features should be incorporated. Separation of powers, and checks and balances. No system of government is perfect, but these offer the best protection from tyrrany that's yet been devised.

well you know what i mean. if someone declares themselves a christan they get the death penalty.
My, my, You really have to stop lying like this. The Coptic Christians in Egypt are part and parcel of Egyptian society. They even held hands together with their muslim neighbours when protesting against Mubarak.

Apostasy does not mean believing in another religion it means to abandon or disaffiliate from your religion!

Egypt does not punish apostasy with the death penalty. And yes Egypt does have capital punishment for other crimes.

As I understand it the death penalty exists in all forms of Islam for blasphemy. The only discussion would be around what constitutes blasphemy.
So a country that has a majority Muslim population is likely to have such laws.
As people get threatened with death even for drawing cartoons its not exactly encouraging.
It really does not matter why one is put to death. Capital punishment is an uncivilised way to punish anyone.

Notice some muslim countries that have in practice stopped using it and some that have totally abolished it. Yes the majority of muslim countries do impose capital punishment but not all of them for religious reasons.
Abolished for all crimes
Abolished for crimes not committed in exceptional circumstances (such as crimes committed in time of war)
Abolished in practice
Legal form of punishment

please quote the part where i say aposty is believing in another religion. i know perfectly well what aposty is, and 84 % want the death penaly for aposty. i think around 72% want strict sharia law. genital mutilation stands to make a strong comeback.

so do try and keep up.

So if a Copt Christian declares his faith then he faces the death penalty? You do not know the meaning of the word apostasy.
