The Horde: WARNING! This movie is about St. Alexis of Moscow but does unfortunately contain a brief topless shot of Taidula when she is in the bath house.

Time of Violence (Parts 1 and 2): WARNING!!! This movie is about the Janissaries, who were an elite corps of slaves made up of conscripted young Christian boys, and became famed for internal cohesion cemented by strict discipline and order withing the Ottoman empire. The scenes include naked rape scenes and brutal torture and executing of the Christians. It is very much like making a movie about an older version of ISIS and what they do to Christians. Based on eyewitness written accounts. In the 17th century, a Bulgarian Christian region is selected by the Ottoman rulers to serve as an example of conversion to Islam. A Janissary who was kidnapped from the village as a boy now serving the Ottoman sultan is sent to force the reluctant inhabitants to convert. The Bulgarian christians have to chose between physical annihilation and losing their spiritual identity. Ultimately torture, violence, and rebellion break out. Based on real events and the novel "Time of Parting" (Vreme Razdelno) by Anton Donchev. The novel is based on two individual eyewitness written accounts - by the priest Aligorko and the Venetian. The resulting text is a translation of the original French and Old Bulgarian (Old Church Slavonic) texts. All names, characters and events appear in the original manuscripts. The movie is filmed exactly where the event took place in history and many of the actors are heirs of the original villagers.

Yes, all of them are subtitled in English but are in a foreign language.
Still very worth it - and thankful they have been translated for subtitles! :) Thank you!

(My only problem is that I rarely actually WATCH Tv closely enough to read an entire movie, but I will make time!) :)

How is that movie? Is it what you would call an orthodox movie with Christian themes or does it only have orthodoxy as a background?

it's pretty good, but cheesy and over the top. it's more for Ukrainian patriotism, but there is good stuff faith-wise in there as well

No Way! Not in Russian and Ukrainian films! ;)
The original black and white Alexander Nevsky was horrible propaganda. The Teutonic Knights in the movie might as well had swastikas on their arms and the Russians, hammers and sickles.

Actually, I had the wrong movie in mind. It was actually in the movie "Gone baby gone".
