Hello :)

Just wondering, does god hear prayers that you say in your mind?

Sometimes when I pray, I speak while praying and I know that god hears me then but I often pray in my mind, does god hear me then? also do I have to say Amen out loud at the end of the prayers in my mind?

Does the bible say how we should pray? and also just wondering why do we put our hands together while praying?

Thanks :)

Yes, God absolutely hears the prayers in our mind- and the prayers of our heart. He knows our thoughts- which can seem a bit freaky at first- but, when you consider it, is incredibly comforting, as he understands completely.

When I'm praying alone- and no-one is likely to interupt me (whether indoors, out in the field while I'm walking the dog, or wherever), I tend to pray aloud. That may be speaking in a kind of whisper or actually talking aloud as if someone is next to me. That's a personal choice for me, because I find it helps me to focus. When I'm alone and pray in my mind, I have an annoying tendency to let my thoughts wander- so, for me, praying aloud keps me 'on track'.

Of course, it isn't always possible- and God knows that. Some Christians prefer silent prayer- some are very contemplative by nature. We have two friends who come to our Bible study group but go to a different church. They're Quakers and silence forms a huge part of their time in church. They can be in silent prayer for well over an hour or two at times. I couldn't cope with it- but they love it.

You don't need to say 'Amen' at the end. You don't need to say it at all! It doesn't make the prayer any more or less valid. 'Amen' simply means 'so be it' and is a good way to 'round off'. If you like to say it in your personal prayers- that's great. If you don't say it- that's no biggie.

As for 'hands together'...that's an interesting one, I think. There's nothing in the Bible that tells us to do that- or not to do it, for that matter! I've heard several theories- one being that clasped hands make people feel that they're connected to God- as if he's holding their hand and they're holding his. Some feel that hands being pressed together is a sort of 'pleading' position-presenting needs to God.
Some feel that it gives our hands something to do- and when thinking about the traditional palms together that children do so much....well, to be honest, during prayer time in church when many eyes are closed and kids not watched so directly- teaching them to pray like that meanas that you jolly well know what their hands are doing! If they keep theri hands like that- they're less likely to fidget, poke someone, or stick a finger up their nose!

Who knows?

What matters is that you feel comfortable doing whatever you do with your hands during prayer. If I'm sitting still, I usually have mine loosely clasped in front of me (on the table mostly). Or they could be busy making a cup of tea as I pray. Sometimes I hold a little wooden cross- not because I believe in any sort of power in an inanimate object- but because it helps me to focus and be aware of what Jesus has done for me. I'm a very visual/ kinesthetic person- so I find it useful.

Try different ways of prayer, Alex and different positions. And you don't have to do the same thing all the time. I mainly sit at a table in the house- but I sometimes stand, kneel walk around or go outside.

Hi Alex

Yes, God does hear prayers that we say in our minds. Saying amen is optional; it is a convention which just means 'so be it'; a bit like signing a letter 'Yours faithfully' to show that you have finished.

We put our hands together to stop us fiddling with the remote control for the telly/texting/doodling on a piece of paper. This is optional as well.

God is all powerful and he knows the thoughts of men are futile.
in fact he says after the flood

Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.

Psalm 94
8 Understand, you senseless among the people;
And you fools, when will you be wise?
9 He who planted the ear, shall He not hear?
He who formed the eye, shall He not see?
10 He who instructs the nations, shall He not correct,
He who teaches man knowledge?
11 The Lord knows the thoughts of man,
That they are futile.

12 Blessed is the man whom You instruct, O Lord,
And teach out of Your law,
13 That You may give him rest from the days of adversity,

And Jesus too knowing their thoughts
24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub,[f] the ruler of the demons.”

25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Men should pray often and not grow weary of it.
You dont need to say amen in your mind to get God's attention.

Yes he does. The psalmist talks about it.

You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. Psalm 139:2

Ps:139:23: Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

Ps:94:11: The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they are vanity.

It's in a bunch of other places in the Word too:

Mt:9:4: And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

I'll stop now. But yeah the Word is clear that He hears our thoughts and not just when we speak.

God knows every thought that you think, so of course He hears if you're praying silently :)

The Bible does give a few clues as to how we should pray, and not pray. Check out Matthew 6:5-14...

“When you pray, don’t be like hypocrites. They like to stand in synagogues and on street corners to pray so that everyone can see them. I can guarantee this truth: That will be their only reward. When you pray, go to your room and close the door. Pray privately to your Father who is with you. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you.
“When you pray, don’t ramble like heathens who think they’ll be heard if they talk a lot. Don’t be like them. Your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
“This is how you should pray:
Our Father in heaven,
let your name be kept holy.
Let your kingdom come.
Let your will be done on earth
as it is done in heaven.
Give us our daily bread today.
Forgive us as we forgive others.
Don’t allow us to be tempted.
Instead, rescue us from the evil one.

“If you forgive the failures of others, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive others, your Father will not forgive your failures.

Some people believe that we need to recite the prayer Jesus gave above, word-for-word. Others believe it's a model prayer that we just need to form our own personalized prayers around. I believe we should observe the "formula" of that prayer, but use our own words. It starts with a reverent greeting, followed by ackowledgement of God's sovereignty, words of submission to God's will, requests for things we want and need, repentance and forgiveness (from God, for ourselves, or for others), and prayers for whatever spiritual needs we have for the future (strength, protection, help with temptation, etc).

I've also heard, as someone else posted, that the gesture of putting our hands together is simply to give us something to do with them, so we don't fidget around. It's also a gesture of submission that you see in some earthly cultures, and that fits here as well. Showing your hands together like that shows that you aren't hiding anything, you have no weapon, you aren't in a defensive stance, and so on. I don't always do that when I pray.

Not all prayers have to follow a strict formula, though. I think God understand that sometimes we're upset, scared, hurt, angry, or overwhelmed, and He doesn't expect us to sit down and formulate a "proper prayer" or else He'll just ignore us. I think He'd much rather hear your heart than some neat, tidy recitation that you don't really mean.

I believe the answer is YES.

But from a strictly scientific viewpoint - I admit that my line of thinking must seem "idiotic" to many people. How on earth could anyone hear my thoughts - even God? The truth is that this is an excellent example where Christianity goes in a different direction than the rational scientific world. Scientists would argue that we are "delusional" if we believe that there is a God who hears our thoughts, or even our whispers.

Nevertheless, with no evidence at all to support it, I still believe that somehow God is aware of our hearts and our minds.

It's pretty amazing, really!!

blessings,
Gideon

I give you this verse from 1 Samuel 16:7
"But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Surely god knows everything and I have never asked god anything out loud because I find no need for others to interfere when I converse with god.
