I think it is the preference of most Churches which differs, at one Baptist Church I went to used the NLT as their pew Bible, another either used KJV or NIV (can't remember), and yet another I have yet to figure out what translation they use (different pastors read out of different translations). Even though it is a little harder to follow reading scripture in sermons I usually use a translation I am comfortable with (NIV, NKJV, or NLT).

I would guess that most Independent Baptist churches use the KJV. I'm not sure what the Southern Baptists use.

My Baptist church uses the KJV. They are an Independent Fundamentalist Baptist church and support the KJV only theology. I went to a Southern Baptist church for a while and they used the HCSB in their Sunday School lesson books. I believe the HCSB is really popular among Southern Baptists. I'm not sure what version they preached from though.

In our church, the preacher who is older uses the NKJV I believe and the assistant preacher (30's) uses the NIV version. I prefer the NIV because it's easier for me to understand. So it just depends on the person I would say.

I suspect this differs widely from church to church. As Holly mentioned, there are some (primarily fundamentalist) churches that only use the KJV. I suspect a majority leave the choice up to each individual person. Many pastors I know will look at several before choosing which version best communicates a particular text. Most surveys and polls I have seen indicate that the NIV is one of the most popular translations, if not the most popular. My preference would be to carry two Bibles to church: A parallel Bible containing the KJV (or NKJV), NIV, NASB and Amplified, and a Life Application Bible (because of the study notes)--though for serious study I prefer using The Complete Biblical Library.

I'd say no, but I'd also have to say no general rule could be made when dealing with Baptists and translations. I have only meet one baptist in 'real time' that used the NIV.

I have been a member of a southern baptist church since Jan, 1988,
I know that our pastor used KJV for sermons, he had pastored the church sfor 30 years before he retired, I have been homebound disabled since before he retired and the new Pastor I am not sure.
Members use whatever translation they are comfortable with, the pew bibles are KJV, But the church does not advocate only one translation is correct etc.

I use a NIV study bible, and ryrie NAS study bible.
They are the translations i am most comfortabe with and can understand the best. Tho' I have heard that there are other translations that are pretty good, which i hope to look into when i am doing better finacially, I would love a paralell study bible in fact.
My ryrie bibe i got when i was anew christian and the back cover has long fallen off and been lost lol, the front cover is taped on, i keep it in a handy bible cover/carried, to keep it together.


My opinion about translations comes from a friend of mine who went to seminary for no other reason but to learn how to translate from the original language, she didnt go for any kind of career opportunity, just for learning the word and understanding it better. And she says NIV is very much on the mark and KJV very much not. She gave me examples at teh time, this was 14 years ago lol, the examples have long left me.

I liken someon who speaks modern dya english reading KJV to the same person trying to understand a french or spanish written bible. Its simpley not our language.
But this is my conviction and opinion as well.
I dont expect anyone else to subscribe to it, thats between them and the Lord.

I will never use any other translation other than the KJV. I believe that it is the most accurate translation.

I only have experience with 5 different Baptist Churches. I went around and did a lot of searching before I settled on my church home. 4 of these churches use KJV only, the other one used many different versions.

my church does. At a church i use to goto in MO this old lady told me that they were KJV only. Kinda drives me nuts sometimes (no offense to the kjv'ers). Lol i told her i was a ESV only man and i think she got a little mad... Didnt mean to make her mad it just happened.

Anyways, I'd much rather use the NIV then the KJV especially for ministry. The KJV is hard for me to read (and i'd consider myself a smart fellow). On my evangelism team we'd hand out NKJV because we got them for free. The complaint from the troops was that it was still to old sounding and that they didnt understand what it was talking about when they read it (referring to the old style english). One time we got a shipment of NIV's (a fluke), the result was much better.

I understand others have their own beliefs, but, knowing what i know about the translations, i sometimes feel like the KJV is the only true word of God belief is naive or a some what legalistic. I truely mean no offense by that, its just my opinion.

I have had someone argue this point with me and call NIV or anything but KJV to be a work of satan before and that kind of extreme response to the word of God really bothered me, coming from a very vocal professing Christian.

The Baptist church that I go to uses the NKJV mostly for preaching and many in the congregation are hostile towards the NIV. *shrugs* I like both and use a parallel Bible to follow the pastor and to get a better understanding of the passage.

I like how someone in another thread stated that the original kjv included the apocryphal works. the KJV only are at a loss if it is an infallible version.
