Schumer Torched for Blocking School Safety Bill After Uvalde Shooting

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is taking heat after he blocked a school safety bill.

Following the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) asked for unanimous consent to pass the Luke and Alex School Safety Act.

The bill, which is named after Luke Hoyer and Alex Schachter — victims of the 2018 Parkland, Florida, school shooting — would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to “establish a Federal Clearinghouse on School Safety Best Practices for use by state and local educational and law-enforcement agencies, institutions of higher education, health professionals, and the public,” according to a summary of it.

What a callous and disgusting thing to say. I doubt you see the irony in your statement.

Let's really see what is really going on here.....
Instead, the Senate is "going to vote on gun legislation," the New York Democrat said, asserting that Americans "are tired of moments of silence, tired of the kind words offering thoughts and prayers." Schumer said he would be open to considering Republican Senator Ron Johnson's Luke and Alex School Safety Act, but he wanted to first focus on proceeding with his proposed Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act. That bill, he said, "will let us take action on guns."

Makes sense to me.

There's a reason why Democrats politicize mass shootings. They use it to go after guns. They don't actually care about the victims.
Remind me what republicans have done to stop the mass murder of children? Thoughts and prayers was it?

Yeah - anything but actually dealing with the fact that any crazy person can own a gun in America.

Did you read the OP? It is a bipartisan bill they have been trying to get through for years.

Eh. Would you expect politicians to not politicize something that concerns the public in a big way? There's a lot of Americans who want gun reform, and it's the business of politicians to capitalize on the interests of the public and gain their votes. Your cynicism regarding their not being motivated out of care for the victims could be correct. But I think it's besides the point. Not convinced that it is purely a matter of opportunism though. Guys like Beto O'Rourke aren't just opportunists, they're idealists too.

It's the truth. Democrats can never let a tragedy go to waste.
I remember the Terry Schiavo case and how much it was politicized by the right and religious groups.
The result of all this publicity, in my experience, was a mad rush by people to write living wills because they said they would never want to be kept alive in such a state. It is good for loved ones to know a person's wishes if they become catastrophically ill.
In both these cases, there were people who wanted to save lives. I don't doubt the absolute sincerity of those who are horrified at the 554 school shootings in the 20 years since Columbine, and all the naughts and prayers offered by those who want to do nothing.
I also don't doubt the absolute sincerity of those who feel that feeding tubes should never be removed because they are "ordinary" rather than "extraordinary care."
Why do you?

Maybe "effective solutions" are not his first priority.

There is an election coming up and a certain party is not doing very well at the moment.

Every tragedy is politicized in the following days. It's when momentum is best to effect changes to improve the issue. Why should gun violence be above reproach? If you aren't willing to listen or compromise to decrease the deaths of children in America from gun violence it seems you don't care about the victims. Ironic indeed.

In an about-face from what he said as a 2020 presidential candidate, Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke said on Tuesday that he's ''not interested'' in forcing Texans to turn in their guns.

''I'm not interested in taking anything from anyone,'' O’Rourke told reporters in Tyler, Texas, the ABC affiliate KLTV reported. ''What I want to make sure that we do is defend the Second Amendment. I want to make sure that we protect our fellow Texans far better than we're doing right now. And that we listen to law enforcement, which Greg Abbott refused to do.''
