A) There's no constitutional right to secede, that was cemented in numerous court rulings following the civil war.
B) Even if that legal precedent hadn't been set, such a thing would require a tremendous uphill legislative battle (thus the reason it's been difficult to try to achieve statehood for PR...if matters like that were simple, Democrats would've done it already)
It would be even more difficult in this sort of case for a litany of reasons,
- the rest of the blue states aren't going to be keen on giving up one of their major electoral states
- one could make a strong argument that a person (or property owner) can't be compelled to trade their US citizenship (and rights contained within) for Canadian citizenship ("Sorry, we're Canada now, you can no longer buy XYZ, and if you're a business owner...sorry, we'll be fining you if you don't get French signage put up in your business")
- all federal buildings would have to relocated out of NY.
- what's do be done with the elected congressmen and officials for the state of NY, do they automatically become Canadian MPs?
- our stock exchange is seated in NYC, so we'd have to relocate our financial district.
And the biggest one...and this can't be stressed enough, you could need the buy-in from Canada lol
Do you think Canada wants to inherit a bunch of high-crime cities (by their standards) that would effectively almost double their national population size overnight?
(total population of Canada is currently 38 million... NY state has 20 million and Mass. has another 7 million...and another couple million from the two other states mentioned)
Right now, the state of NY receives about $90B in federal transfers every year in order to stay propped up.
Ontario receives $3B in federal transfers from the Canadian government...anyone else think Canada may have some issues trying to absorb a state like NY?
That's why all of these "we're going to secede" sentiments are dumb.
"Our guy lost and the other guy won, we don't want to be Americans anymore" or "our team lost, so let's overthrow the government" ...if people don't want to deal with the consequences of losing, try doing the things that produce a win.
At the end of the day, the formula is pretty simple. Advocate for things people like, avoid advocating for things people don't like... do that and half the battle is already won.
