Yeah, since the OC looks down on both dating and cohabitation. I'm curious as well.

I have never heard before, from any Orthodox source, that dating is frowned upon. Where did you hear such a thing?

I mean, we certainly look down on the typical modern dating paradigm, where dating is its own sort of end and the expectation is only a sort of serial monogamy. The typical modern dating paradigm can be a sort of adversarial dance where we look to see what we can get out of people, always prepared to trade for a better model with more alleged compatibility. But if dating isn't that, if it's directed towards looking for a wife, it's perfectly fine.

Since when does Orthodoxy look down on dating? Cohabitation is destructive to a future marriage.

To put it bluntly: dating should not be in any way like shopping and calculation.

I agree...to a point. But there are certain qualities that you would certainly look for in a prospective spouse.
Are they neat, are they honest, are they industrious, are they considerate, are they true Christians compatible with your own moral code and expectations? Will they be good conversationalists? Is their intelligence on a par with yours? Do they share your kind of humour?

These are all qualities one should be expecting as BASIC to a good, life-long relationship. I've learned that from hard and bitter experience.

I have recently found the woman GOD prepared me to be with for the rest of my life. I am over 40 now. For the first twenty year of adulthood I held very strict standards. I would not consider a woman who was not a christian with some measure of piety. Have previously been in small denominations my options were severely limited. (part of GOD's plan)
When I became Orthodox I travel continually for work and on pilgrimages to Orthodox countries. So my thoughts of wife were far from me. I gave my self to almsgiving as a true pilgrim on the earth. I imagine myself a bit like the pilgrim in "The way of the Pilgrim"
Slowly GOD challenged me to change my way of thinking. God brought to me a woman full of mercy and kindness and love and faithfulness. A poor widow but widowed very young. I only hope that I can live up to her example and be her devoted husband all the rest of the days of my life.
So If you want a God-inspired wife, devote yourself to God and serve the poor wherever you are. God will give the second greatest blessing a man can receive from GOD. The Blessing of a Godly, loving wife. The Greatest Blessing we receive is salvation.
