Communion wine

Is there a standard wine used in communion?

After communion yesterday, as we sat back down in the pew, I told my wife, "this communion wine is the best wine I have ever tasted." She laughed and said that's all she could think of as she took communion, was how good the wine tasted.

I don't normally drink wine, but I need to find out what kind our church uses, it is really good.

There isn't a standard wine. There isn't even agreement on red wine or white wine, bit of which are perfectly fine.

The general consensus though seems to be make it cheap and make it sweet.

There is no set type used as long as it's wine and not plain juice. Many prefer red or rose over white because of the color, but there is no hard fast rule. The church that I did my field ed work at in seminary used Port, which is quite potent. My vicarage congregation uses Manischewitz which is very sweet. We use wine from Onehda Vineyard near Rochester, NY which produces altar wine exclusively.

We use Manischewitz too, and I keep two or three bottles of my own at the house because I like the taste so much.

My mom thought that was weird for some reason, having the same wine at home as what is used in communion.

I think that technically speaking one could also use grape juice instead of wine.
By saying "technically speaking" I mean Christ was saying "the fruit of this vine".
Grape is a fruit of the vine.

Were they drinking wine? Yes.

But I do not think the content would change if it is wine or grape juice.

But I do not think the content would change if it is wine or grape juice.

My point is that we do know that they were drinking fermented drink, but I am not convinced that using unfermented juice is within the institution of the Sacrament, thus I am not convinced that the Blood of Christ is present in unfermented juice. I feel it is best that we stay within the institution of Christ.

Just to add my 2 cents here, which may be worth only 1, I am convinced that Christ is present whether it is grape juice or wine. It's all made from grapes, which is the actual fruit.

Was Jesus and His followers drinking fermented drink? Yes. They were also eating a Passover meal. We don't do that, and yet Christ is present in the wafers or bread, whichever we use, so the same spiritual logic would apply to grape juice/wine.

The "fruit of the vine" is grape.
We know that.

Why would it matter if a grape is fermented or not?

Christ never mentioned wine, just a fruit of the vine.

As far as I can see I would go by what Christ said - fruit of the vine and bread.

The Lord's Supper is not a Passover Meal. It is distinct as St. Paul explains in 1 Corinthians.

We use a blood red wine..it's very..well it doesn't taste very good. But I like it because it's a powerful reminder.
