The following information was adapted from Larry Gilbert's book titled, "How to Find Meaning and Fulfillment through Understanding the Spiritual Gift Within You".
I've seen a lot of discussion over the past week about evangelism and evangelists. Look at the list below and see if you either see yourself in some of these things or someone you know... By all means, it's not exhaustive, just a list of some common characteristics found in most people who are driven to evangelism...
DEFINITION:
Evangelism is the Spirit-given capacity and desire to serve God by leading people to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ
CHARACTERISTICS:
A) Outgoing; seldom meets a stranger
B) well-groomed and neatly dressed
C) solitary in personal time
D) works either one-on-one or in groups
E) socially active
F) more light-hearted than depressed
G) expressive in speech and communication
H) perception is subjective rather than objective
I) sympathetic to sinners / tolerant of people and their weaknesses (outside the church)
J) emotional-based decisions / impulsive
K) appears peaceable and agreeable
L) displays enthusiasm
M) talkative / interruptive
N) enjoys being center-stage
STRENGTHS:
A) consuming passion for souls
B) believes salvation is the greatest gift of all
C) desires to meet lost people
D) would rather confront the lost with salvation than anything else
E) is forgiving
F) clarity of salvation message
G) usually has a burden to memorize scripture
H) has great joy in seeing the lost come to Christ
I) demonstrates competence
J) holds the attention of listeners
K) remembers people's names and faces
L) works hard to become a good listener
WEAKNESSES:
A) thinks everyone should be evangelists
B) may be satisfied to get a decision for salvation just to get one
C) may turn others off by pressing for a decision
D) will rarely admit that evangelism is a gift - usually has another definition
E) believes strongly in "confrontation evangelism"
F) tends to dominate other people
G) thinks every message must be an attempt to win the lost - usually causes him/her to be weak on teaching other areas of scripture
HOW THE EVANGELIST IS MISUNDERSTOOD BY OTHERS:
A) Others think he/she is not interested in other church programs
B) Others think he/she is pushy
C) Others think his/her aggressiveness is for own benefit
D) Others think he/she is more interested in "numbers" than people
E) Others think the evangelist judges their spirituality by the number of souls they have won
HOW SATAN MAY ATTACK THIS GIFT:
A) May cause pride in number of "converts"
B) May cause failure to grow and learn
C) May cause the evangelist to see people as "numbers" instead of people
D) May cause discouragement when converts are few or infrequent
E) May cause lack of concern for Bible passages that can't be used as "soul winning" texts
Indeed, a special and unique species...
I salute you, Evangelists!
