To all:
No offense, but I believe there are several reasons why a person may defend the use of skulls.
(a) They have very little knowledge of the occult, or
(b) They have not studied God's Word enough in depth to truly know that God wants us to sell out in following Jesus and His good ways and not the dark ways of this world, and that we must be holy and separate from the world, or:
(c) It is a combination of the the two above options.
We are living in the last days, my friends. Many have a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof. They are lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God (See: 2 Timothy 3:1-9). We clearly see in Revelation 21:4 that God's will is to forever put away death. Skulls are usually associated with death metal groups, and those who are into the occult. If we are servants of the light, why would want to be mistaken for being a part of such darkness? It makes no sense.
If you walked into a house with skulls all over the wall (real skulls) you would think something was not right. Well, I sure hope that would be the case. If not, you need to check that "Moral Compass" or ask the Lord for the gift of discernment.
We see in Scripture that God is not in favor of us marking our lives with death.
"You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD" (Leviticus 19:28).
We are to focus on that which is good and not that which is evil.
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things." (Philippians 4:8).
No doubt if you wore skulls to church, many who are seeking to follow Jesus purely will be offended because death represents darkness, evil, and death.
"Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:" (2 Corinthians 6:3).
Some believers save with fear and they even hate the garment spotted by their sinful deeds.
"And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh." (Jude 1:23).
I mean, stop and think for a moment. If a person in a business suit who was clean and had nicely combed hair, and was clean shaven and smelled nice walked up to your door, you would have a good impression of that person. But if a person walked up to your door, and they had skulls all over their body and they were wearing a cloak and they had piercings, and tattoos and looked like somebody who was a part of horror movie or cult, you would be a little on edge that this person was at your door. This is because one's outward appearance can sometimes reflect what is on the inside of a person. While this is not always the case, it is our human nature to shun those who look like the kind of person who can harm us. Well, unless one hangs out with these kinds of people, then that is another matter. But what fellowship does light have with darkness?
Colossians 3:1-2 says,
1 "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."
Colossians 3:9-10 says,
9 "seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:" (Colossians 3:9-10).
Romans 12:1-2 says,
1 "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God"
I trust my King James Bible when it says in 1 Thessalonians 5:22 when it says the following,
"Abstain from all appearance of evil." (KJV).
I say this because most of your Modern Translations seek to water down the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the blood atonement, holy living, etc.
While Modern Translations are helpful in updating the 1600's English in the KJV, they should not be our final word of authority. Wescott and Hort (who are known occultists) had created a Greek text upon which most of all your Modern Translations are based upon. It's why the devil's name has replaced certain holy things within the Bible. But of course, people will not want to see this. They want to defend their own way or path. My encouragement is to trust God and His Word in what it says. For faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).
