I was reading my bible earlier and finally finished Genesis:clap:.
Anyways there was a few bits in there that caught my eye,it`s to due with Jacobs, and Josephs lifespan, and well i remember in the first few chapters of Genesis god said he would make man mortal and so i looked on bible gateway and found the quote:
Genesis 6:3 Quoted from [url=http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+6:3&version=NLT said:
Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal lifespan will be no more than 120 years.”

And so why is then i found this quote
Genesis 47:9 Quoted from [url=http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+47:9&version=NLT said:
]Genesis 47:9 NLT - Jacob replied, “I have traveled this - Bible Gateway[/url]
Jacob replied, “I have traveled this earth for 130 hard years. But my life has been short compared to the lives of my ancestors.”
and there`s
2 Chronicles 24:15 Quoted from [url=http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Chronicles+24:15&version=NLT said:
Jehoiada lived to a very old age, finally dying at 130.
also
Job 42:16 Quoted from [url=http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Job+42:16&version=NLT said:
Job lived 140 years after that, living to see four generations of his children and grandchildren.
There`s probably more but i can`t be asked to look. Can a christian please explain, why god said people won`t live more than 120 years, yet they`ve lived for 130+ years.
This to me makes the bible sound like one big story, i`m hoping someone can change my mind.
Please also can you quote from the bible or just say the passage that`s relevant.

Thank You

You have to be careful what translation you use. NLT is a good translation for leisurely reading but not good for in depth Bible study. You need to look at a Bible translation that is more literal such as NASB, NKJV, or KJV.

Anyhow, some interpret the 120 years as the time between this declaration and the flood, not the maximum number of years a person will live.

I'll give you what I understand Jahleel:

Gen 6:3:
3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

This doesn't speak to how long a man will live. God has determined to destroy the world in 120 years. If you notice in Gen 6:5, God begins His plan to destroy man off the earth.

Then God follows up by choosing Noah in Gen 6:13:
13 Then God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence because of them; and behold, I am about to destroy them with the earth.

God spoke of The 120 years as a pronouncement of the flood and destruction of man off the face of the earth. it is not about a lifespan. Then after the 120 years came the flood. Jacob lived after the flood when life span was shorter but still long and there was no relevance to the destruction of mankind. So 120 years after God pronounced it he destroyed the earth, it takes some study to get it figured right.

Gen 6:13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Those exact years in Genesis (120 years) also fall to the exact number of years when Moses himself died (according to the word of the Lord)

I really stink at numbers and their significance, so I cant be too helpful here save what I have considered.

What I always found interesting is in Genesis 6:2 is that God numbers mans days to 120 (years) and this just before the flood. Herein also lies the similitude of baptism (as mentioned in 1Peter 3:21). Which is also just before the place (and time) Moses died recorded at 120 years in Duet 34:7. This too before the Jordan (which again) can show figure of baptism. These appear equal. Not only in times (in years) but in figures. Even as the law and the prophets were “until John” also (who baptized in the Jordan) himself. To me it appears as some kind of “marker” of sorts before water.

Just something I was considering though, might not have helped the thread any.

Hebrew exegete, H C Leupold, in his commentary on Genesis (1942. Exposition of Genesis. The Wartburg Press, also London: Evangelical Press) translates Genesis 6:3 as,
And Yahweh said: My spirit shall not judge among mankind forever, because they also are flesh. Yet shall their days be one hundred and twenty years (p. 254).
He gives the Hebrew grammatical reasons for this translation and then his commentary states:
Entirely in harmony with our rendering is the concluding statement of the verse, which marks the setting of the time limit of divine grace. For these words, "yet shall their days be one hundred and twenty years," are to be taken in the sense of the traditional interpretation: one last period of grace is fixed by God for the repentance of mankind. The previous word indicated (3a) that God might well have cut off all further opportunities of grace. This word (3b) shows that grace always does more than could be expected. Before disposing of the guilty ones a time of grace of no less than one hundred and twenty years is allowed for their repentance. This use of "days" (v3) is established by the use of the same word (v4) "those days." Consequently, the modern interpretation that takes this word to mean that God here decreed that in the future the span of man's life was not to exceed one hundred twenty years is quite unfounded. This view is proved untenable by the fact that quite a few after the Flood lived in excess of this limit: 11:11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25; 25:7; 35:28; 47:9. The evasions of the critics in meeting this argument need not be mentioned, being too palpable (Leupold, pp 256-257).
We know from the following context of Genesis 6:5-8 that God is preparing for the judgment of the Flood. So the 120 years has nothing to do with the longevity of a person's life after that time, but the time before the judgment by destruction in Noah's Flood.

Sincerely, Oz
