Beware Liberal NRSVue Bible Translation Update

In partnership with others, the extremely liberal National Council of Churches (NCC) has recently conducted an ambitious update of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) translation of the Bible, called the “NRSVue” or NRSV Updated Edition.

But the NCC is not an academic, intellectually responsible, or non-partisan organization.

We at IRD have documented over the years how, despite its name and church ties, the NCC is largely a divisive, extremely liberal, clearly partisan U.S. political activist group. The liberal NCC has repeatedly promoted hard-left stances on homosexuality, abortion, and other matters, even opposing the official stances of its affiliated denominations.

Jim Winkler, the NCC’s President and General Secretary since 2013, has been notorious for his extreme ignorance and misrepresentations of Scripture as well as very basic matters of the official theology of his own United Methodist Church. He views “so-called Christian academies and home schooling” in America as similar to extremist Islamic madrassahs in Pakistan.

If you want to stick with the RSV family, which is a decent translation family, there is the Catholic Edition, modernized a bit in the Second Catholic Edition published by Ignatius Press. RSVCE2 or RSV2CE. It's good English, it isn't woke, it's scholarly although a little old, and it's adequately Catholic. When pope John Paul II was pope The RSVCE became the Bible version the Vatican used when it quoted the Bible in English. In the Second Catholic Edition it is a highly readable high accuracy text. No need to go with a NRSVue which seems to be a woops.

Still prefer the Douay Rheims, very dated but accurate English translation of the Latin Vulgate. Sometimes requires me to have a dictionary to look up words and phrases, requires more study than simple reading, but is not Sacred Scripture more about study than taking what one reads for granted?

The NRSV has been problematic since the original came out. With each variant it gets worse. When I was a fresh Christian several ago I remember googling which translations were best. I came across several recommendations for the NRSV, but not a single one was for its accuracy, but rather for its pandering. It might be that only the satirical Queen James Bible is worse.

I use an RSV-CE New Testament and Psalms as my daily / carry around. My fiance and son use the NLT because it's easier for them. I have an Orthodox Study Bible from my Orthodox days that's good for when we need all the books.

I'm liking the ESVCE these days. Newer with more recent scholarship, not Woke or pandering, good English, seems to be accurate. And I think it had the RSV as a base anyhow.
