That said. Militarization of school zones to protect against armed intruders is not really a viable option.

It would be much easier to just remove the mass shooters weapons of choice from their possession. (Plus we wouldn't also need to fortify our shopping centers, grocery stores, churches, outdoor markets, barber shops, restaurants, etc.)

Then they would just choose another weapon. The weapon is not the problem it’s the people who use them. If you were able to keep them from obtaining firearms ( you can’t) you would just make them less efficient.

I'm not particularly eager to see schools turned into machine gun nests, but I think you're being unrealistic if you think it would be "much easier" to remove weapons from America than to put guards into schools.

Yes if there’s a resource officer on the scene to stop them. You are opposed to them. And actually a person with an edged weapon 21 feet away from you can travel that distance and stab you before you can draw your weapon and get off a shot. If they take out the security first (if there is any) then they can attack people for however long it takes the police to arrive. Let’s say 10 minutes, how many people could they stab in a crowded classroom with one door?

At this point, I think it's more "we have no evidence of a problem with the school" rather than "we have evidence it was not a problem with the school". But given the earlier description of a 'manifesto', one would think the police would have more clarity about motive.

It’s true there are far more people killed in the US by firearms than from knife attacks in the UK per year but 57 percent of gun deaths in the US are suicide and we don’t know how many are accidents but death from firearms dwarfs death from knife attacks, I’ll give you that. If you could take away all guns you could reduce the number of victims but you can’t. Criminals will be the only ones with guns if you succeed in passing laws that outlaw guns and like your comic strip says that’s not likely to happen.

I can understand why you would assume that is what I mean. Those who resist any kind of gun regulation argue it's an infringement of their right to bear arms, hence my comment. No, I'm for gun regulation (note: I didn't say "take guns away") as well as other approaches, such as adequately dealing with mental health issues. Perhaps there are other approaches that need consideration. But , yes, without sliding down the mythic slippery slope of assuming gun regulation entails taking all guns away, we need stricter gun regulations.

I also think we need a cultural shift in how we think about guns. We have a culture that has an irrational reverence for guns, and violence in general. It's a weird fetish of sorts that is inordinate. It's not like we have a bunch of folks that love to hunt and have a desire to have the right tool for the job. We have a bunch of folks that love guns. They love guns so much that the thought of regulating them makes them angry, as if their secret fetish or a religious symbol were being denied them. Oh, they'll go on about how they need them to protect them from criminals or government overreach. But really, I think they just like the power of being able to kill someone. It makes them feel like God, powerful and indestructible. It really does seem to be a religious thing with them. A weird fetish that gives them power. In short, guns have become an idol, an object of worship.
